Hints for Today’s Connections Categories

Here are some spoiler-free hints for today’s groupings:

  • Yellow category – Component of a larger entity.

  • Green category – Elements that produce sound.

  • Blue category – Attributes of a substantial mammal.

  • Purple category – Their albums likely bore a “parental advisory” warning, albeit spelled differently.

WARNING: Spoilers Follow!

We’ll soon unveil some answers. Please proceed cautiously if you want to avoid complete spoilers! (The full solutions are listed a bit further below.)

Note on the Challenging Terms

DRUMSTICK refers to a physical object used to play a drum, not food. Similarly, WING does not relate to food but rather indicates a part of a structure.

TRUNK and BRANCH don’t belong together.

LIMB and BISCUIT appear adjacent when you first access the puzzle. While they don’t pair up, mentioning them may lead to a certain band, hinting at today’s purple category (music knowledge will be beneficial).

Categories for Today’s Connections Puzzle

  • Yellow: SECTION

  • Green: INSTRUMENT PLAYING ACCESSORIES

  • Blue: CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ELEPHANT

  • Purple: MISSPELLED NU METAL BAND NAMES

DOUBLE WARNING: Solutions Below

Ready to discover the answers for today’s Connections puzzle? Find them all listed below.

The Yellow Category Answers

The yellow grouping is typically the most straightforward. Today’s yellow theme is SECTION with the words: BRANCH, DIVISION, LIMB, WING.

The Green Category Answers

The green category represents the second-easiest set. Its theme is INSTRUMENT PLAYING ACCESSORIES, comprised of: BOW, DRUMSTICK, MALLET, PICK.

The Blue Category Answers

The blue grouping is identified as the second most difficult. Its theme, CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ELEPHANT, includes: EAR, MEMORY, TRUNK, TUSK.

The Purple Category Answers

The purple category is deemed the hardest. Its theme is MISSPELLED NU METAL BAND NAMES, featuring: BISCUIT, CORN, LINCOLN, STAINED.

Strategies for Solving Today’s Connections

Upon examining the words, BISCUIT, DRUMSTICK, CORN, and WING may initially suggest barbecue-related items. Yet, DRUMSTICK, PICK, BOW, and MALLET distinctly signal tools used in music (drum, guitar, violin, xylophone). This feels promising. 🟩 Success!

DIVISION seems solitary regarding potential intersections with other words. It likely fits with BRANCH, LIMB, and WING, representing divisions or sections. 🟨

EAR, TRUNK, and TUSK are parts of an elephant; MEMORY connects as well, echoing the saying that elephants never forget. 🟦

Therefore, LINCOLN, BISCUIT, STAINED, and CORN appear as words associated with metal bands, though spelled variably: Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Staind, and Korn. 🟪

Playing the Connections Game

A comprehensive guide on playing Connections is available, but here’s a quick overview:

Start by locating the Connections game either on the New York Times website or through their Games app (previously known as the Crossword app). The game interface consists of a board with 16 tiles, each displaying a word or phrase. Your task is to come up with sets of four tiles that share a commonality. Often, these tiles will represent similar types of items (for instance: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of precipitation), although sometimes players must consider wordplay (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH all refer to lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

Select four items and hit the Submit button. A correct selection will reveal the category and color coded according to difficulty (yellow is the simplest, followed by green, blue, and purple). If incorrect, you have another chance to try again.

You win once you identify all four groups correctly. However, making four erroneous guesses before finishing will end the game and disclose the answers.

Winning Strategies for Connections

A key aspect to winning Connections is recognizing the challenging nature of the groupings. Expect instances of overlapping categories. For example, previous puzzles featured breakfast items like BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON turned out to connect to a group of painters (CLOSE, MUNCH, WHISTLER), while EGG associated with items typically found in dozens (JUROR, ROSE, MONTH). Thus, it’s crucial to confirm that your selected four truly belong together before hitting “submit.”

If you’re feeling lost, another effective strategy is to analyze words that appear to lack links with others. If WHISTLER brings to mind the artwork known as “Whistler’s Mother,” it may lead to a potential connection. While solving that puzzle, verifying the existence of a painter named Close proved insightful since it didn’t immediately relate to conventional themes either.

Moreover, when stumped, reading through helpful hints—as provided in this post—is a useful move. Return here tomorrow for fresh insights on the next puzzle!
