Discover the New Messaging Sensation: Explode
Rising rapidly through the ranks of the iPhone App Store, Explode is making waves in the world of messaging applications. This innovative tool allows users to send disappearing, or “exploding,” photos to friends via iMessage, with images designed to self-destruct after just a few seconds. Similar to platforms like BeReal and Snapchat, Explode emphasizes fast, uncomplicated sharing that requires minimal effort.
One of Explode’s standout features is that your friends do not need to install the app to receive your messages. However, they must be using iMessage, as compatibility with Android devices is not available—recipients cannot even view messages on the web.

To begin using Explode, users must provide a phone number and name, after which the app can be integrated into iMessage. Users can easily take a new photo or select an existing one from their gallery, choose how long the photo will remain visible (anywhere from one to ten seconds), and send it off. The app also allows for text overlays on the images or the option to send a blank backdrop with text only.
Once sent, the recipient can tap the image to view it. After the designated time elapses, the picture shatters into fragments, disappearing entirely—a visually striking effect. Those interested in additional features can opt for a premium subscription priced at $7.99 per month or $39.99 per year, which includes options like screenshot blocking and the ability to replay photos.
Explode prides itself on simplicity, offering very few settings and customization options. There is a history section that allows users to see pixelated thumbnails of previously sent images and track who has viewed them, but beyond this, the focus remains on core photo-sharing functionalities.

It is important to note that the app is quite assertive in utilizing Live Activities on the iPhone, showcasing a persistent display on the screen that promotes a one-month premium subscription if three photos are sent within an hour of installation. While users can manage Live Activities for Explode through the Settings app, its initial behavior can feel somewhat intrusive.
Explode is developed by Nikita Bier, who previously created the apps Gas and TBH, both of which allowed users to send compliments and anonymously ask questions before being shut down after their acquisition by Discord and Meta.
While the concept of disappearing images is not novel, with apps like Snapchat, WhatsApp, Signal, and Instagram offering similar functionalities, Explode’s minimalistic approach provides a refreshing charm. It eliminates the hassle of persuading friends to download an application, making it straightforward and user-friendly. If Explode continues to gain traction, it may not be long before additional features are introduced.
