Enhancements in ChatGPT Interaction via WhatsApp and Phone Calls
In December, OpenAI introduced a groundbreaking way to engage with ChatGPT: users can call 1-800-CHATGPT—yes, it’s a real number. If WhatsApp is your preferred platform, you can also text the same number to express your thoughts.
Even though some advanced features of ChatGPT were not functional, the foundational aspects of the interaction remained intact. Users can ask questions vocally or through text, and the AI generates responses that mirror the inquiry. For those on WhatsApp, this interaction resembles chatting with a friend—albeit one who provides informative replies in real-time thanks to AI capabilities.
Now, just a couple of months after launching this contact method, OpenAI is enhancing WhatsApp capabilities. Two significant updates have been introduced: first, users can upload images during their chats, allowing ChatGPT to analyze pictures or use them for contextual understanding in queries.
Secondly, voice messages can now be sent to ChatGPT. This feature is particularly useful when calling isn’t convenient and typing out a message feels cumbersome—recording a voice note becomes a quick alternative.
Moreover, OpenAI has announced that a functionality to link ChatGPT accounts—whether they are free, Plus, or Pro—to WhatsApp is in the works, although it has yet to be implemented.

These improvements are set to enhance the usability of ChatGPT for WhatsApp users, although some limitations persist. OpenAI provides each U.S. number with 15 minutes of call time monthly, alongside a cap on daily WhatsApp messages. Additionally, this version of ChatGPT possesses knowledge only up to October 2023, meaning it lacks information regarding events that have transpired in the last year and a half.
For those who frequently utilize ChatGPT, downloading the dedicated app is likely the best choice. However, if interactions are infrequent and cluttering the phone with additional applications feels unnecessary, exploring image and voice messaging options on WhatsApp can be a suitable alternative.
