Review of the Brane X Speaker: Sound Quality Meets Versatility
Prior to this exploration, the Brane was unfamiliar, but now it has captivated my attention every time I listen to music. The Brane X offers a wealth of features, and while it comes with a price tag of $499, it delivers exceptional value. This speaker is built for multiple uses: it’s waterproof, integrates seamlessly with Alexa, connects via Wi-Fi for enhanced audio quality, and excels in delivering deep bass. Moreover, it can function effectively as both a soundbar and subwoofer. It’s an ideal choice for those who appreciate rich bass, enjoy outdoor music sessions, and are in need of a home theater solution. Despite its strengths, it faces stiff competition in its price range. The Sonos Move 2 is more affordable, features a replaceable battery with 24 hours of lifespan, and provides superior treble and mid-range sound, although it falls short on bass and overall sound range compared to the Brane X.
The Brane team kindly provided the product for an objective evaluation, which you will find reflected in this review.

Initial Impressions of the Brane X Speaker

Initially, the Brane X left me perplexed. Powering it on lacked clarity, as the button offers no tactile feedback. The same can be said about the media controls located on top, although further details will follow. There was also a peculiar whirring noise that emerged upon activation, raising concerns of a potential malfunction (this noise dissipates shortly after). This sound originates from an air pressure equalization mechanism inside the device, featuring patented technology known as Repel-Attract-Driver (RAD). This technology distinguishes the Brane X, enabling it to deliver an exceptional bass range unnoticed by other speakers. Testing with various frequency ranges revealed that not only did the Brane X handle the full spectrum effortlessly, but it also made my entire office vibrate with robust bass. For this reason, the minor humming annoyance is a trade-off I’m willing to accept.
Design

When evaluating the design, it feels relatively bland. The all-black finish is a safe choice, but the absence of color options leaves a desire for personalization, whether through stickers or other accessories. Another flaw is the reliance on touch controls without tactile feedback. This creates uncertainty about whether commands were registered, and the absence of a dedicated play/pause button forces reliance on a smartphone or Alexa for operations. Given its outdoor-friendly IP57 rating and substantial weight of nearly eight pounds, physical buttons would greatly enhance usability.

The charger utilizes a DC connection, regrettably foregoing USB-C charging, which is more conventional for many devices. The manufacturer promises 20 hours of use at a moderate volume, but testing yielded only six hours when played at approximately 75% volume. Charging the speaker from fully drained takes around three hours.
Audio Performance

Audio quality is where the Brane X truly excels, particularly for bass enthusiasts. The RAD technology ensures a remarkable output from this compact speaker. Even when placed against the larger JBL PartyBox Stage 320, which is known for its party atmosphere, the Brane X’s output can nearly match its 240 watts, with just a 2dB disparity in volume. However, it’s important to note that this device isn’t designed for massive gatherings. At maximum volume, it demonstrates some strain on higher frequencies.
At normalized listening levels, the clarity of sound is outstanding. The extensive bass range translates into a full-spectrum sound experience without requiring high volume. With tracks like “MONACO” by Bad Bunny, the sub-bass elements are perceptible, creating an immersive feel typically reserved for louder listening devices. The Brane X handles this bass without excessively disturbing the neighbors.
Notable Features of the Brane X Speaker

Primarily a Wi-Fi speaker, the Brane X outperforms Bluetooth alternatives with superior connectivity and sound fidelity. Music can be streamed through Spotify Connect for direct input, ensuring optimal audio quality. AirPlay 2 and Amazon Alexa integration are also well-executed, providing seamless operation.
The Brane Companion App

Experience with the companion app is consistent with many speaker applications: functional, though occasionally inconsistent. It efficiently serves its purpose—monitoring battery status, fine-tuning the five-band equalizer in real time, and activating the AUX Pass-Through for use as a soundbar. If multiple Brane X speakers are owned, linking them is possible; however, I did not have an opportunity to test this feature.
Performance as an Outdoor Speaker

As is customary, I brought the Brane X outdoors during a street soccer event. Playing in a confined rink, where sound echoes, the audio still battled to fill the area entirely. That said, compared to the larger party speakers I typically utilize, the Brane X stands out due to its versatility. Nonetheless, audible compression at peak volume was occasionally noted, and while Bluetooth streaming reveals these limitations more than Wi-Fi, its IP57 rating assures it is well-suited for outdoor use.
Utilization as a Soundbar

To utilize the Brane X as a soundbar, an AUX cable is required (or at least for connection to the speaker). While wireless Chromecast could have enhanced convenience with my smart TV, Bluetooth is an option, although it won’t leverage the AUX Pass-Through feature to minimize latency. While the sound quality may not reach eARC level, the internal subwoofer pleasantly surprises with its excellent performance, making it functional as both a soundbar and subwoofer.
Revisiting Dune allowed for a thorough assessment of the Brane X’s capabilities in this role. The speaker dramatically enhanced the viewing experience compared to the built-in TV speakers of my TCL QM7 TV. The thuds from the thumpers were palpable, creating an impressive auditory narrative enhanced by the speaker’s dynamic capabilities.
Concluding Thoughts

The Brane X is a formidable Wi-Fi speaker with subwoofer capabilities that provide an impressive sub-bass range. It stands out in the market as the ultimate choice for bass enthusiasts. With support for Spotify and AirPlay 2, the common audio needs are well-addressed. Additionally, its compact design ensures ease of portability for outdoor use, featuring a waterproof IP57 rating and a battery life that lasts up to 12 hours. Maximum volume reaches a notable 98dB, and it effectively serves as a soundbar and subwoofer ensemble suitable for movie watching. However, this versatility comes at a steep price of $499. For those seeking to enjoy the Brane X at full volume, be aware that Bluetooth may present some compression issues, and despite having multiple microphones, it lacks a speakerphone option. Notably, reliance on a DC charger may not suit portable Bluetooth expectations.
The Brane X becomes an excellent option for individuals searching for a versatile speaker capable of outdoor adventures, home entertainment, and everything in between. It is particularly recommended for those who prioritize bass in their audio experience and are not already within the Sonos ecosystem.
