The Yellow Words in the Puzzle

The yellow classification is the clearest. The theme for this group is CELLPHONE SETTINGS, and the words included are: AIRPLANE, DO NOT DISTURB, RING, VIBRATE.

The Green Words in the Puzzle

The green category is easier but requires some thought. The theme here is EVADE, with the words being: DODGE, ESCAPE, LOSE, SHAKE.

The Blue Words in the Puzzle

The blue category presents a medium challenge. The theme is WHAT “W” STANDS FOR, comprising the words: TUNGSTEN, WATT, WEST, WIN.

The Purple Words in the Puzzle

The purple category is considered the most challenging. The theme revolves around ___ STRING, including: DRAW, HAM, HEART, SHOE.

Approach to Solving Today’s Connections

VIBRATE, AIRPLANE, RING, and DO NOT DISTURB represent notification settings on a mobile device. 🟨

DODGE, ESCAPE, SHAKE, and LOSE are all terms associated with avoiding someone or something. 🟩

TUNGSTEN might seem uncommon, being an element found on the periodic table. It’s also associated with a type of light bulb, suggesting a link to WATT. Plus, TUNGSTEN’s abbreviation is W, connecting it with WIN, WEST, and WATT as well. 🟦

This analysis leads to the conclusion that HAM, HEART, DRAW, and SHOE all correspond with the word “string.” These connect as HAMstring, HEARTstring, DRAWstring, and SHOEstring. 🟪

Understanding How to Play Connections

A comprehensive guide to Connections is available, but here’s a quick overview:

Your first step is to locate the Connections game either on the New York Times site or through their Games app. There, you’ll find a game board featuring 16 tiles, each displaying a word or phrase. The objective is to select a set of four tiles that share a common quality. These could represent similar classes of items (i.e., RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW being forms of precipitation) or involve clever wordplay (i.e., BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH relating to different types of lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

Choose four items and click the Submit button. If the selection is correct, you’ll see the category and its corresponding color. (Yellow indicates the simplest category, followed by green, blue, and lastly purple.) Incorrect guesses offer a chance to try again.

Victory is achieved upon identifying all four groups correctly. Beware, though: making four mistakes before completion results in the game concluding with an automatic reveal of the answers.

Winning Strategies for Connections

The key to mastering Connections is recognizing that the groupings are intended to be complex. Overlapping categories are a frequent challenge. For example, within one puzzle, six breakfast foods included BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON unexpectedly aligned with a set of painters, including CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG associated with entities that come in dozens (including JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Hence, it’s crucial to avoid hitting “submit” until confirming that your selection indeed comprises only those four items.

If a deadlock occurs, consider examining the words that initially appear to lack connection to the others. A term such as WHISTLER may evoke the well-known painting “Whistler’s Mother,” serving as a clue to tip the scales. Researching unfamiliar terms like Close might also provide insightful connections.

Utilizing helpful hints is undoubtedly a beneficial strategy when feeling stuck. Return tomorrow for another exciting puzzle!

Happy gaming!
