The Future of OneNote: What You Need to Know

This week, rumors circulated suggesting that Microsoft’s widely-used note-taking tool, OneNote, is facing an end. However, the truth is that only a particular variant called “OneNote for Windows 10” is being phased out.

What does this mean for users? If you’re not operating on Windows, this information will not have any consequences for you. For those utilizing a Windows system, check the title bar of your OneNote application. If it does not state “OneNote for Windows 10,” this update won’t impact you. However, if it does, it’s crucial to note that this version will be unsupported starting October 14. Fortunately, the desktop edition of OneNote is available for download free of charge, and all of your existing notes can be easily synced.

It is essential to highlight that the desktop version boasts several capabilities that “OneNote for Windows 10” lacks. For instance, it allows you to store notebooks offline, which eliminates the necessity of a OneDrive account to access the app. This transition has been on Microsoft’s radar for years, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Despite the inevitability of this shift, some users are expressing dissatisfaction. “OneNote for Windows 10” was designed with mobile functionality in mind and continues to appeal to those who favor touch-enabled Windows devices. While conducting reviews, both versions of OneNote were evaluated, and the desktop version proved to be more comprehensive. Nonetheless, it’s understandable that some users prefer the streamlined, efficient, and user-friendly nature of “OneNote for Windows 10.”

What are your thoughts on this?

As of now, you can still download OneNote for Windows 10 here. However, Microsoft recommends against this. They are introducing pop-up alerts and intentionally reducing syncing speeds to persuade users to transition. After October, the support for this version will cease entirely, meaning no more security patches, and, following historical trends, we can anticipate gradual functionality decline.

If you currently utilize “OneNote for Windows 10,” it’s time to decide on your future note-taking app. It’s advisable to download and experiment with the desktop version of OneNote first. If it doesn’t meet your expectations, numerous other note-taking solutions are available, such as Obsidian, which can even import your notes from OneNote.
