Understanding How to Play Connections

For a detailed overview, refer to the full guide to playing Connections. Here’s a quick recap:

Locate the Connections game on the New York Times website or via their Games app. The game board features 16 tiles, each containing a word or phrase. Your mission is to identify a group of four tiles that share a common thread. These groups often represent similar items (e.g., RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW as forms of precipitation), but sometimes rely on wordplay (like a collection of items such as BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH, representing different types of lists).

Select your four tiles and hit the Submit button. A correct guess unveils the category and color associated with it (yellow signifies the easiest level, followed by green, blue, and purple). If incorrect, another guess is allowed.

Victory comes when all four groups are correctly identified; however, making four mistakes results in game over and the revelation of answers.

Strategies for Winning Connections

A crucial aspect of excelling in Connections is recognizing that the groupings can be quite clever. Overlapping categories are common. For instance, one puzzle included several breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. Yet, BACON was actually part of a group of painters along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG was in a category with other dozen-grouped items (like JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Therefore, refrain from hitting “submit” until you can confirm that your selected group truly comprises only those four items.

If you find yourself at a standstill, another effective tactic is to focus on the words that appear disconnected from the others. For instance, if the term WHISTLER only brings to mind the renowned painting titled “Whistler’s Mother,” it’s worth investigating. Similarly, in past puzzles, the name Close didn’t belong to any apparent themes, so a quick search might lead to breakthroughs.

When things get tricky, seeking out daily hints—as provided here—can offer valuable guidance. Be sure to check back often for upcoming puzzles!

Happy solving!
