Important Notes on Challenging Terms

FALLOPIAN pairs with another word to describe a component of the female reproductive system.

CATALYST refers to something that initiates a series of events.

WINTERGREEN may be associated with products made by brands like Orbit or Trident.

Those acquainted with jazz, show tunes, and vocal legends will find the blue category more accessible.

Today’s Connections Categories

  • Green: STARTING POINT

  • Blue: GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK SONGS

  • Purple: ___ TUBE

Ready for Today’s Solutions?

Discover today’s Connections answers below:

Yellow Category Solutions

The yellow category features the easiest theme: GUM FLAVORS, with the words: BUBBLEGUM, CINNAMON, MENTHOL, WINTERGREEN.

Green Category Solutions

The green category represents the second-easiest theme: STARTING POINT, with the words: CATALYST, LAUNCHPAD, SPARK, SPRINGBOARD.

Blue Category Solutions

The blue category poses moderate difficulty. The theme is GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK SONGS, with the words: AUTUMN LEAVES, SUMMERTIME, UNFORGETTABLE, WITCHCRAFT.

Purple Category Solutions

The purple category is the toughest. Its theme is ___ TUBE, featuring the words: FALLOPIAN, INNER, TEST, VACUUM.

Unraveling Today’s Connections

FALLOPIAN stands out quickly as it relates to “tubes.” INNER and TEST could also pair with that notion. A fourth option eludes me for now.

SPARK, LAUNCHPAD, CATALYST, and SPRINGBOARD all clearly suggest synonyms indicative of origins or accelerators. 🟩

WINTERGREEN, CINNAMON, MENTHOL, and BUBBLEGUM all hint at possible flavors of gum. 🟨

AUTUMN LEAVES and WITCHCRAFT evoke thoughts of Halloween, yet I don’t observe any further connections shaping up.

As I reflect on the “tubes” category (FALLOPIAN, TEST, INNER), VACUUM seems to be the only appropriate choice left. 🟪 I was unfamiliar with vacuum tubes, but they indeed exist.

This leads me to AUTUMN LEAVES, UNFORGETTABLE, WITCHCRAFT, and SUMMERTIME—perhaps they are song titles? 🟦 After further consideration, WITCHCRAFT hails from 1957, UNFORGETTABLE from 1951, AUTUMN LEAVES from 1945, and SUMMERTIME from 1935.

Playing Connections

A comprehensive guide to playing Connections is available, but here’s a brief overview of the rules:

Access the Connections game via the New York Times website or their Games app (formerly known as the Crossword app). The game board presents 16 tiles, each displaying a word or phrase. The objective is to identify four tiles sharing a common theme. These might relate to similar categories (for instance, RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW represent types of precipitation) or involve clever wordplay (e.g., BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are types of lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

Choose four items and click the Submit button. A correct guess will disclose the category and color (yellow being the easiest and purple the hardest). If incorrect, an opportunity for another guess will be provided.

The game concludes when all four groups are identified correctly. However, if four mistakes are made prior to completion, the game ends, revealing the answers.

Strategies for Winning Connections

Winning at Connections requires understanding that the groupings are intentionally tricky. Be prepared for categories that may seem to overlap. For instance, one puzzle included six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON formed a group of painters along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG found itself in a set of items typically found in dozens (including JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Therefore, resist submitting your answers until you are confident that your selected four belong together.

If you’re feeling stuck, consider analyzing words that appear disconnected from the rest. For example, if WHISTLER conjures thoughts of the painting known as “Whistler’s Mother,” you might be close to the solution. In similar situations, checking for more obscure connections could prove fruitful.

When facing difficulties, utilizing hints can be advantageous—hence the daily suggestions provided here. Make sure to return tomorrow for the next puzzle!

Happy puzzling!
