Nintendo Switch Update: Fixes and Troubleshooting for Version 20.0.1
Nintendo has recently launched a notable update for the Switch, designated as version 20.0.0. This release introduces a host of new functionalities and modifications, including virtual game cards and a GameShare feature, paving the way for the upcoming Switch 2. Unfortunately, this update also resulted in unexpected issues: instability within the system.
Users who transitioned to version 20.0.0 reported encountering a specific error—Error Code: 2206-1015—causing some consoles to unexpectedly crash. While not all users experienced this glitch, the extent of the problem prompted Nintendo to publicly acknowledge it on their customer support page. In their announcement, they expressed regret for the disruption and confirmed they were investigating the situation.

Nintendo quickly responded to the issue, revealing their findings on Thursday, May 1, and subsequently releasing a corrective update, version 20.0.1, on Friday, May 2. Per the release notes, this patch addresses the Error Code: 2206-1015. Users installing this update should not anticipate any new features from version 20.0.0, other than the resolution of error codes.
Updating an Unresponsive Switch
However, the challenge arises for those whose consoles are affected, as conventional updates may not be possible due to system crashes. Fortunately, Nintendo offers a method to perform the update through Maintenance Mode. Here’s how:
-
Start by ensuring your Switch is completely powered off. Press and hold the power button for 12 seconds.
-
Simultaneously hold the volume up and volume down buttons while pressing the power button to switch the system on.
-
Maintain your grip on the volume buttons until the Maintenance Mode menu appears.
-
Once the menu is visible, select Update System and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update process.
