The Evolution of CarPlay: Upcoming Features in iOS 26
While Apple may not have brought forth its own vehicle, it has certainly revolutionized in-car experiences with CarPlay. With the launch of iOS 26, several exciting enhancements are on the horizon, including a refreshed interface, bigger text options, and a host of new accessibility functions. Here’s what users can expect from the upcoming CarPlay update:
Widgets and Live Activities

The introduction of Live Activities in iOS 26 means that CarPlay users will have access to real-time updates without needing to interact with their devices. This feature allows you to track deliveries, monitor flight statuses, and more—all with ease. For those who frequently pick up or drop off at airports, the flight status alerts may prove particularly beneficial.
Live Activities will appear directly on the CarPlay dashboard as long as they are activated on your iPhone. They may also function as pop-up notifications over applications like your navigation system. According to Apple, users can disable Live Activities if desired and even manage their visibility through distinct Focus modes.
Additonally, widgets for features like calendar events, weather updates, and sunrise/sunset times will be integrated. Users can select the widgets displayed on their CarPlay interface by navigating to Settings > General > CarPlay on iPhone, selecting their vehicle, and choosing their preferred widgets.
Compact View for Incoming Calls

The revamped CarPlay interface includes a compact view for phone calls. Now, incoming calls will show up as minimal pop-ups rather than dominating the screen. This means essential information, such as navigational directions, remain visible while you’re on a call.
Enhanced Features in Messages

The Messages app in CarPlay will soon support Tapbacks, allowing drivers to react to messages with emojis quickly. Additionally, users can view pinned conversations directly from their iPhone, making it easier to text individuals they contact frequently.
New Iconography

The new Liquid Glass design style will also be featured in CarPlay. Whether users are fans or not, these refreshed icons will be prominently displayed on car interfaces.
Enhanced Accessibility Options
The updates in iOS 26 will introduce Large Text support, increasing text visibility on the car display. Moreover, a feature for Sound Recognition will alert both drivers and passengers when certain sounds are detected, including sirens, horns, and a baby’s cry, enhancing overall safety and awareness while driving.
