If you’re unfamiliar with Prime Day, we offer a comprehensive guide on all you need to know. Note that prices and availability can fluctuate.
Though AirPods Max are a personal favorite, recommending them can be tricky. They are a perfect match for anyone invested in the Apple ecosystem: easily connect to devices, provide top-notch noise cancellation (ideal for aviation), and deliver impressive sound quality. The downside? Their price tag.
The usual price for AirPods Max sits at $549, placing them among the priciest consumer headphones available. Similar headphones in this segment typically range from $250 to $450, making AirPods Max a hard sell for those not fully integrated into Apple’s offerings. For those simply seeking high-quality headphones, cheaper options exist.
However, during Prime Day, you can snag a new pair for $429.99—a savings of over $100, equating to 22% off the retail price. While still pricey, this places them within reach of their category price point, rather than significantly above it. For anyone interested, now is an opportune moment to purchase.
In terms of functionality, AirPods Max are quite user-friendly. Much like their counterparts, they automatically connect upon being worn, switching seamlessly between Apple devices. For instance, if music is playing on a Mac and a video is initiated on an iPhone, the headphones will transition to the iPhone without any manual adjustments. This feature can be disabled, but it has become remarkably efficient lately.
The headphones boast outstanding noise cancellation, alongside a Transparency Mode that allows external sounds in through miniature microphones, enabling conversations without removal. Even with noise cancellation off, AirPods Max still provide good passive noise blocking simply by being worn.
One of the standout characteristics of the AirPods Max is their impressive battery lifespan, rated at 20 hours. This vastly surpasses Apple’s other earbuds. Utilizing their case when not in use drastically reduces the need for frequent charging (just remember, they can’t be switched off outside the case).
Should You Opt for the New AirPods Max or the Original Version?
It is worth noting that the current AirPods Max are not the original iteration released in 2020. A revamped version hit the market last September, but at first glance, the adjustments may not be obvious. Primarily, the enhancements involve new color variants, a shift to USB-C in place of Lightning, and an “ultra-low latency” audio feature for wired playback to enjoy lossless quality via wired connection.
These upgrades are certainly beneficial—especially the last two features. At one time, the original version was favored due to better discounts available during events like Prime Day. If you were okay sacrificing USB-C for Lightning, significant savings were possible while enjoying a similar experience.
Today, the narrative has shifted. The new model not only outperforms its predecessor but is also increasingly challenging to find as new. A renewed original pair can be obtained for under $399, but if a brand-new set of AirPods Max can be purchased for $449, that price doesn’t seem unreasonable.
Alternatively, Explore AirPods Pro
For those in pursuit of excellent sound quality that integrates seamlessly with Apple devices, the AirPods Pro is a solid choice. In fact, for many, they may provide even more value than the AirPods Max, thanks to exclusive features despite the lower cost. Enhancements like Conversation Awareness—a sophisticated version of Transparency Mode that lowers audio when you begin speaking—would be a welcome addition to AirPods Max.
Amazon has an enticing deal on the AirPods Pro this Prime Day, making them a worthy alternative if the $449.99 price point feels steep. These offer expected features—noise cancellation, automatic device switching, and top-tier audio—plus even more benefits.
