Bluesky’s Update: Enhanced Features for a Better User Experience
Bluesky has rolled out its latest update, introducing several valuable enhancements to its already robust set of anti-harassment features. These new options simplify the process of concealing direct messages (DMs) from unknown users and allow for quicker account muting. There is no need for any manual updates; simply ensure you’re using the latest version of the Bluesky app or access the platform via a browser to enjoy these new functionalities. Here’s a rundown of the features introduced in Bluesky’s 1.99 update.
Manage Direct Messages from Unknown Users
The influx of unwanted messages from strangers can be overwhelming, and Bluesky has recognized this issue. In cases of targeted harassment, users can now easily filter DMs from unfamiliar accounts. Navigate to the Chat section on Bluesky’s app or site, where a new Chat Requests button will be visible at the top. All DMs from unknown users will automatically be directed here. You have the option to accept or decline these requests, allowing for greater control over who can contact you.
Quick Mute Option for Accounts
With this update, users can swiftly mute accounts straight from any post. While scrolling through your feed, if you come across a post that is displeasing, just click the three-dot icon adjacent to it and select Mute account. This action will silence the account until you decide to unmute them. This feature is particularly beneficial for avoiding unwanted content like political discussions, spoilers, or provocative posts, eliminating the need to navigate to their profiles just to mute them.
Extended Video Length on Bluesky
The video duration limit has also been extended on Bluesky. Previously capped at 60 seconds, users can now share videos lasting up to three minutes with the 1.99 update. This increase aligns Bluesky closer to its competitors; for example, Threads permits videos of up to five minutes, while X (formerly Twitter) limits non-subscribers to two minutes and 20 seconds.
Additional Enhancements
In addition to the major updates, several other improvements have been implemented. The platform now offers translations into three new languages—Esperanto, Scottish Gaelic, and Welsh. Users accessing Bluesky via tablet devices will also benefit from enhanced layouts. Furthermore, the update has refined the process for reporting inappropriate posts to moderators and improved error messages encountered during account registration.
