What to Know About ChatGPT’s New Memory Feature
Exercise caution with what you disclose to ChatGPT, as it now retains all previous interactions.
OpenAI is launching an update that enhances ChatGPT’s memory capability, enabling the bot to recall the details from all prior discussions. This improvement aims to facilitate more pertinent responses to your inquiries and ongoing dialogues. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, recently shared news on X, highlighting the advantages of AI tools with comprehensive knowledge of user interactions:

The concept of memory in ChatGPT is over a year old, though its earlier versions had significant limitations compared to the current update. Previously, ChatGPT could remember user preferences or requests—like a preferred summary format or a chosen nickname—carrying these memories from one chat to the next. However, it lacked the ability to seamlessly integrate past conversations as one might expect from a true memory feature.
In the past, the bot compiled memories into a “bank” where users could review what had been saved based on their interactions. The process felt somewhat invasive, akin to discovering a new acquaintance taking notes about your discussions. It was an odd experience.
As this feature is being rolled out, it remains uncertain how it will impact the existing memory bank. It is likely that these specific memories will be phased out, as the chatbot will now have the capability to retrieve all prior exchanges with ease.
The utility of this new feature may vary for each individual. While the ability to refer back to previous conversations without having to confirm that the bot remembers certain facts is appealing, there may be discomfort in the idea of a chatbot retaining everything that has been shared. This reaction could stem from skepticism regarding generative AI as a reliable personal assistant, as well as concerns about the extensive data collection practices of tech companies. Time will reveal whether this enhanced memory functionality proves beneficial for users.
This update will initially be available to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Pro, with no current information about when it might be rolled out to free users. Additionally, individuals in the U.K., EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland will experience delays due to local regulations necessitating further reviews before launch. (Requiring AI companies to undergo thorough evaluations before releasing new features could be beneficial globally.)
Disabling ChatGPT’s Memory Feature
For those concerned about their chatbot having access to an extensive history of conversations, there are options to disable the memory function.
Although the exact process might shift as updates are introduced, currently you can navigate to Settings > Personalization > Memory, and switch off the toggle next to Reference saved memories.
If maintaining the memory function is desired, yet a specific chat should remain “forgotten,” initiating a “temporary chat” can keep that conversation separate. However, it’s important to note that OpenAI may still retain the chat logs for up to 30 days.
