Enhancements to Gemini Technology
In line with the previous year’s December Pixel Drop, many of this month’s updates are driven by Google’s Gemini technology. Gemini Live now boasts the capability to seamlessly transition between 45 different languages during conversations without requiring adjustments to your device’s language settings. Additionally, the multimodal features that enable users to incorporate images, files, and YouTube videos into chats are now available on Pixel 6 models and later, as well as on Pixel Fold devices. Advanced video and screen sharing functions have also been introduced for Gemini Advanced.
For those utilizing the Pixel 9 equipped with Gemini Nano, an innovative real-time Scam Detection feature will soon be accessible, offering alerts for potentially harmful calls. This AI-driven, on-device functionality recognizes typical patterns of scam conversations and displays a prompt to disconnect the call. Additionally, Scam Detection is also integrated into Google Messages for users with Pixel 6 or newer devices situated in the U.S., Canada, or the UK. Should the AI suspect a scam text, a warning will prompt users to report and block the sender.
Furthermore, in the realm of artificial intelligence, the Pixel Screenshots application will gain a suggestions feature and enhanced compatibility with work profiles, while Pixel Studio is set to generate images of individuals based on user-provided descriptions.
Notably, while several features primarily cater to users in the U.S., enhancements like Pixel Screenshots, Pixel Studio, and AI-driven weather reports, including a Pollen tracker in the Weather app, are being launched for users in Germany and Japan. The Recorder App will also offer AI-generated summaries in Japanese (limited to Pixel 9) alongside its existing English functionality.
Exciting New Health Features for Pixel Watch
Owners of the Pixel Watch 3 in the U.S. can expect to receive the Loss of Pulse Detection feature soon. This innovative addition monitors the user’s heart rate; if it senses the heart has stopped beating and the person remains unresponsive, it automatically contacts emergency services with a pre-recorded message (a cellular connection is required for this function). Following FDA clearance, this feature is anticipated to roll out by the end of the month. Additionally, the Pixel Watch 3 will soon support on-device menstrual tracking and provide more precise step counting adapted for atypical walking patterns, including activities like pushing carts or hiking with poles.
Moreover, Auto-bedtime Mode, designed to disable your watch face and mute notifications when you fall asleep and reactivate them upon waking, will soon be available for the Pixel Watch 2 as well.
Upgraded Connectivity Features
In its latest release, Google introduces multiple safety-centric connectivity features. Among these is a beta version of Find My Device, which enables friends and family to view your live location. The Satellite SOS feature—allowing users to reach emergency services without a cellular or internet connection—is now broadened to Pixel 9 users in Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, and Canada, while satellite texting functionality is available for Verizon and T-Mobile customers based in the U.S.
Enhancements in Camera and Video Capabilities
A new feature named Connected Cameras allows Pixel 9 users to connect their device with another Pixel phone (6 or later) or a GoPro camera (HERO10 Black or newer) to stream video from various angles directly to platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. Additionally, the Dual Screen Preview on Pixel Fold now supports video recording along with the Add Me feature for users on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Other Accessibility and Quality of Life Improvements
The speech-to-text function in Pixel’s Recorder app is set to receive another enhancement. Now, the application can automatically transcribe audio recordings—be it lectures—imported from an older device or a Pixel Watch to the current Pixel device. Additionally, Gboard is introducing a new Voice Toolbar, providing quick access to voice-to-text features without the need to open the complete keyboard interface.
A new Modes menu will be implemented in Quick Settings, allowing users to effortlessly switch between driving, bedtime, do not disturb, and other personalized modes with a simple swipe. Furthermore, Pixel Watch will introduce new audio actions including fast forward, rewind, and options for controlling playback speed and managing the playback queue.
