Google’s New Personalized Smart Replies: A Closer Look
Google has unveiled an intriguing update to its Smart Replies, diving deeper into AI with a fresh feature dubbed Personalized Smart Replies. This announcement was made during the Google I/O 2025 keynote. Utilizing Gemini AI combined with insights from your Gmail and Google Drive, this enhancement aims to generate email responses that emulate your unique writing style. By analyzing your past correspondence, the feature claims to replicate your tone effectively.
This upgraded feature will revolutionize the Smart Replies interface, making it significantly more capable and context-aware. CEO Sundar Pichai illustrated its potential with a scenario involving trip planning. Imagine receiving an email from a friend asking about details for an upcoming journey together. Manually gathering all relevant information—such as hotel reservations, driving routes, stops, and dining suggestions—could be quite time-consuming.
With the Personalized Smart Replies functionality, however, it can streamline this process. It draws from your emails, integrates location history from Google Maps, and utilizes photos and files stored in Google Drive to compose a comprehensive email that reflects your individual writing style.
In a recent interview with The Verge, Blake Barnes, Google Workspace’s Vice President of Product, confirmed that this new Smart Replies feature would initially roll out in English across web, Android, and iOS platforms. An Alpha version will be available in Google Labs starting July, with public access expected in the third quarter of this year. Initially, it will be exclusive to paid subscribers, although there are plans to extend this to all Gmail users in the future, though no specific timeline has been provided yet.
