Classic PlayStation Themes Return to PS5
In December, Sony introduced the first themes for PS5. Although the range was limited compared to other gaming consoles, these themes were nonetheless appealing. They were inspired by the interface designs from previous PlayStation models, including the PSOne, PS2, PS3, and PS4.
The nostalgia factor is undeniable. Each theme recreates the original sound effects, such as the clicking noises while navigating the menus. For those who remember the PS3, the wave background incorporated into the PS5 theme is particularly reminiscent. Likewise, fans of the PS2 nostalgia will appreciate the characteristic menu designs of that era. If you had a favorite console, these themes allow you to relive that fondness—at least when navigating the home screen.
Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived. At the close of January, the themes were taken down, leaving many fans from the 90s and 2000s disappointed. Fortunately, there was some good news: Sony mentioned that the themes would be reinstated after a few months for further enhancements.
It turns out those months amounted to nearly three: Beginning Thursday, April 24, classic themes are back on PS5, as confirmed by Sony in a blog post on Wednesday. The updated feature, now dubbed “Appearance,” includes four beloved themes, stripped of the 30th-anniversary branding.
Accessing the Classic PlayStation Themes

The return of these themes comes with Sony’s latest system update for the PS5. To unlock them, ensure your console is fully updated.
Navigate to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If an update is available, you’ll see Update Available. Click on Update System Software to proceed.
After updating, return to Settings, then select Appearance and Sound. The default theme will be the standard PS5 design, but you’ll have the option to choose among PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, or PlayStation 4.
Another Exciting Update Feature on PS5

Along with the nostalgic themes, Sony is also introducing a feature called “Audio Focus.” This setting enhances softer sounds within games when using headphones on the PS5. Users can customize four sound categories: Low Pitch (for engine sounds and rumbles), Voices (for dialogue, voice chats, and mid-range sounds), High Pitch (for sounds like footsteps and metallic noise), and Quiet Sounds (for underwhelming volume sounds across different frequencies).
Once the update is complete, access this feature via Settings > Sounds > Volume > Audio Focus. You can fine-tune the sound levels for both the left and right channels, adjusting the overall enhancement strength. When adjustments are made, users are encouraged to test their configurations using the “Audio Preview” option within the settings menu to ensure optimal sound experience.
