Reddit has introduced a new feature allowing users to have greater agency over their public profiles. This “curate my profile” functionality grants individuals the ability to selectively display or conceal various activities, including posts and comments, follower counts, and NSFW content associated with different communities.

Updates to Reddit Profile Settings

The revamped “Content and activity” settings enable Reddit users to either hide all public interactions or pick specific activities from certain subreddits to showcase, while keeping other actions private. Additionally, users can opt to conceal their follower counts and any NSFW content or communities from their profiles.

In the past, every contribution, such as posts and comments, was accessible on a user’s public profile, which continues to be the default setting. Although users generally maintain anonymity, their engagement history, including their posts and community interactions, was transparent. According to Engadget, this transparency allowed the Reddit community to monitor user behavior, raising concerns that the ability to conceal actions may obscure negative behaviors.

Conversely, as highlighted by TechCrunch, this new option to limit the visibility of public posts may foster increased participation. Users who were hesitant to engage in discussions surrounding sensitive subjects might have created disposable accounts to shield their activity or chosen to abstain entirely.

It’s important to note that even though users can hide their profile activities, their username will still appear with posts and comments within the communities themselves. Individual posts or comments cannot be hidden selectively; users can only choose to display or conceal all activities from an entire subreddit. Furthermore, moderators may retain access to a user’s history regardless of any changes made to visibility settings.

Adjusting Your Reddit Profile Visibility

As per Reddit’s announcement, this feature started to roll out on June 3. However, it may take some time before all users can access it—updates are necessary to ensure you have the latest version of the app. Keep an eye out for the new Curate your profile option, located just beneath View profile in your app’s profile pane.

Upon selecting Curate your profile, users will encounter features that allow toggling NSFW content and follower counts on or off. Additionally, accessing Content and activity will present a pop-up window with options to show all, hide all, or fine-tune visibility preferences. If opting for Customize, users can choose specific subreddits to exhibit or hide connections with those communities.
