The Launch of Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders: What You Need to Know
After experiencing delays due to tariffs, retailers commenced preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday. While one might hope for a smooth rollout with sufficient stock for all eager buyers, the reality tells a different story.
The anticipation surrounding the Switch 2 is largely fueled by eight years of buildup, with fans excited to secure the first console from Nintendo capable of delivering 4K gaming. Unfortunately, the preorder experience was chaotic: customers were met with endless digital waiting lines, error messages, and a delayed launch at Best Buy. Although some may have managed to secure a preorder in the midst of this turmoil, many were not as fortunate.
Currently, availability for the Switch 2 is quite scarce. A quick online search will likely yield numerous “Sold Out” or “Unavailable” notices in place of the buy buttons. However, this doesn’t mean that stores will be out of stock forever. Successfully securing a preorder may just depend on timing and a bit of strategic planning.
Keep an Eye on Switch 2 Restocks
In the United States, four primary retailers are offering Switch 2 preorders, yet none have consistent availability at this moment. Fortunately, they all provide a glimmer of hope for buyers in the form of restock notifications.
Walmart, Target, GameStop, and Best Buy all have options on their respective websites for customers to subscribe to restock alerts. The requirements for signing up vary by retailer: Walmart and Target require account logins to register for notifications. GameStop allows users to opt for email alerts, while Best Buy primarily sends out general updates about the Switch 2 rather than specific restock notifications.
For the best chance of success, it’s advisable to register for alerts from all four retailers. If there’s a specific version you want, like the console alone or the Mario Kart World bundle (which ensures you have a game to play soon after release on June 5), focus on those options:
There are also various dedicated websites that track Switch 2 stock levels. Websites like RestockTracker, HotStock, and NowInStock can be useful for monitoring availability.
Sign Up for Nintendo’s Offer
Nintendo is also selling Switch 2 consoles directly but without preorder options. Instead, interested buyers can register their interest. To be eligible, customers must possess a Nintendo Account with a minimum of 50 hours of gameplay as of April 2. This requirement aims to deter scalpers from monopolizing the stock.
Once your interest is registered, Nintendo will place you on a queue based on when you signed up. If you’re late to the game, you might find yourself further down the list. However, many others who registered may also be attempting to secure consoles elsewhere, and those who succeed in preorders may decline their position with Nintendo, potentially elevating your standing in line. Currently, Nintendo has indicated that deliveries could extend beyond June 5, as well as the invitations themselves. Nevertheless, this remains a solid alternative if other options fall short.
