About 15 years ago, an e-reader—the Kindle—came into my life. Over the years, various devices and applications from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo have crossed my path, but none have held my attention for too long, resulting in a fragmented digital library. Recently, the review of several e-ink devices culminated in a clear preference: the Boox Palma 2 is my most favored e-reader, despite its steep price tag.
This innovative phone-shaped e-reader from Onyx International slips effortlessly into a jeans pocket alongside a smartphone. It has been my constant companion outside, helping me reduce aimless scrolling while increasing my reading habits over the past year. The impressive e-ink display offers a clarity nearly matching that of the Kindle Paperwhite, yet it differentiates itself with its open Android system, allowing downloads of any app from the Google Play Store. This grants access to books from various platforms including Amazon and Audible, all from a single device.
With a resolution of 300ppi and a commendably fast refresh rate, it’s feasible to utilize productivity applications like Slack, Gmail, and Google Docs. By pairing it with a Bluetooth keyboard, it transforms into an efficient, portable writing space for focused work, or simply browsing the internet with minimal lag. Although no e-ink screen can compete with the sharpness and fluidity of LCD or LED displays, this is precisely the intent—the greyscale interface reduces eye strain and promotes mindful use rather than mindless scrolling.
In essence, this device has fulfilled all my e-reader aspirations, albeit at a significant price. After the imposition of tariffs on Chinese products, the Palma 2’s price escalated from $280 to $300—making it $100 more than Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. However, special promotions during Prime Day now enable access to a discounted price.
Unprecedented Discounts on the Palma 2
It’s indisputable that $300 may be deemed excessive for an e-reader, but currently, it’s available on Amazon for $270, representing a gracious 10% reduction and dropping the price below its pre-tariff figure. While this may appear to be a minor discount, consistent tracking of its price since its debut reveals that I’ve never witnessed it offered at a discount during any Prime Day events.

The Original Palma is Restocked
While there hasn’t been a significant reduction for Prime Day, it’s possible to save $25 by selecting the Palma 2’s predecessor, which now costs $246 since its release last November. Although the original Palma has a slightly slower processor and operates on an older Android version without a fingerprint scanner, it still offers considerable value to the majority—if available in the U.S. (A detailed comparison is available for those on the fence.)As of now, both models appear to be restocked on Amazon. Update as of July 9: Unfortunately, the original Palma has gone out of stock on Amazon again. If a phone-sized e-reader piques your interest, you’re bound to be satisfied with either option.
