Pocket to Cease Operations: What You Need to Know
The well-loved read-it-later platform, Pocket, is set to be discontinued. Mozilla has granted users until October 8 to retrieve their saved items, including lists, archives, favorite entries, notes, and highlights.
Effective immediately, Pocket has been removed from both app stores and browser extensions, and no new sign-ups or renewals are being accepted. The app will officially close down on July 8, after which it will operate solely in export mode. Users must act before October 8 to export their saved content; post-deadline, all accounts and associated data will be permanently deleted.
How to Export Your Saved Content from Pocket
To begin the export process, visit this link. First, ensure your Pocket account is linked to a valid email address; this can be verified at the upper left corner once logged in, as your exported items will be sent to this inbox. If necessary, adjustments can be made to your primary email through the Mozilla support page.
Next, select the button labeled Export HTML file. A confirmation message will appear, and shortly thereafter, an email will be sent containing a link to download a CSV file of your saved URLs.
According to Mozilla, the processing time can range from 24 hours to a maximum of 7 days in certain situations. The download link will expire within 48 hours, so it is advisable to check your spam folder if the export email is not visible. Should the link expire, repeating the process will generate a new one.
There is no need to manually delete your account or its data, as Mozilla will handle this after the October 8 deadline. However, users will need to remove the app and browser extension from their devices once their content has been successfully exported. Monthly subscriptions for Pocket Premium have been stopped immediately, while annual subscribers will receive a prorated refund after the July 8 closure.
While Pocket holds a prominent position among read-it-later apps, several alternatives are available for those seeking different options. A comprehensive list of alternatives has been curated for your convenience.
