Nintendo’s Upcoming Playtest: Secure Your Spot!
Nintendo is set to launch new playtests for what many believe is a MMO inspired by Minecraft. Those interested should be ready to act quickly to participate. This round will allow a total of 40,000 participants, a significant increase from the previous limit of 10,000. Given how swiftly spots filled up during the last session, it’s advisable to expect availability to disappear almost immediately.
The playtest is scheduled to run from July 28 until August 10, compatible with both the original Nintendo Switch and the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. Although Nintendo is maintaining a level of secrecy surrounding the details of the playtest, they did mention that this is related to software that was tested previously in October 2024.
While participants were also bound by confidentiality during the earlier test, that did not prevent information from leaking online. Attempts by Nintendo to manage this through copyright claims were ineffective, as sources, particularly on Reddit, still show glimpses of the game’s early iteration. Current insights suggest that it is an MMO styled after Minecraft, enabling players to collaborate in manipulating blocks within a virtual environment.
According to datamining from user “Sky” on Bluesky, it appears the development team includes those behind Nintendo Labo. The final product is rumored to feature various minigames, robotic mechs, customizable characters, and player-versus-player modes.
For those eager to participate, it’s essential to adjust plans for the evening. Application submissions commence tonight, July 18, at 6 p.m. ET and 3 p.m. PT. While applications can technically be submitted until Monday at 7:59 a.m. PT, it is crucial to remember that selection operates on a first-come, first-served basis; therefore, delays may result in missing out.
To apply, head over to Nintendo’s application page. Once the application window opens, click the “Advance to Application Creation” button located at the bottom of the screen. Applicants must have held an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership by July 17, and must be at least 18 years old as of this date. Additionally, accounts must belong to one of the following countries:
-
Japan
-
United States
-
United Kingdom
-
France
-
Germany
-
Italy
-
Spain
-
Canada
-
Brazil
-
Mexico
Though these requirements seem strict, there’s a silver lining for players looking to collaborate with friends. Instead of applying separately, groups can apply together. One person can act as the representative, completing the application and sending an invitation URL to team members. All group members should be from the same region, providing a way to potentially avoid the rush to the website when applications open.
