Playing the Connections Game

A complete guide to playing Connections can be found here, but here’s a quick overview of the rules:

First, access the Connections game either on the New York Times website or through their Games app (previously known as the Crossword app). On the game board, you’ll find 16 tiles, each displaying a word or phrase. Your task is to select a group of four tiles that share a common theme. These may be things like weather conditions (e.g., RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW), or there might be wordplay involved, such as BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH—categories of lists.

Click on four items and press the Submit button. If guessed correctly, the category and associated color will show. (Yellow indicates the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple.) If incorrect, another opportunity will be given.

Your victory comes when all four groups are accurately identified. Be cautious—four errors before completion leads to an automatic reveal of answers.

Winning Strategies for Connections

The key to success in Connections lies in understanding that the groupings can be quite perplexing. Anticipate overlaps among groups. For instance, one puzzle featured a mix of breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON belonged to a category of painters alongside CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG associated with items that come by the dozen (including JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Always confirm that your chosen four items strictly belong together.

If stuck, turn your attention to any words that seem disconnected. For instance, seeing WHISTLER may lead you to recall the famous painting known as “Whistler’s Mother,” which could spark a clue. When navigating that puzzle, a quick search about the artist Close proved fruitful as well.

If you’re feeling stuck, another great option is to seek some helpful tips—hence the daily hints that are provided. Be sure to return tomorrow for the next challenge!
