Theme Hints for Today’s Connections Puzzle

Here are some thematic hints without spoilers for the current Connections game:

  • Yellow category – All items share a common shape.

  • Green category – Could potentially cause a black eye!

  • Blue category – Components of a magical brew.

  • Purple category – A familiar phrase completed by a known sly creature.

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead!

At this point, some answers will be disclosed. If you wish to avoid total spoilage, scroll carefully. (Complete solutions are found further down.)

Important Note on the Challenging Words

In today’s context, SLUG shouldn’t be understood as a slimy creature, but rather as a verb. Furthermore, HOUND is not used here as a verb meaning “to chase,” but instead parts of a specific breed of dog.

The blue category may be more manageable for those familiar with Shakespeare, particularly a work often referred to as that which is considered bad luck when spoken in theater circles.

Categories from Today’s Connections Game

  • Yellow: ROUND THREE-DIMENSIONAL OBJECTS

  • Green: PUNCH

  • Blue: ANIMALS IN THE WITCHES’ BREW OF “MACBETH”

  • Purple: FOX___

DOUBLE WARNING: THE SOLUTIONS ARE BELOW

Eager to uncover the solutions to today’s Connections puzzle? Here they are:

What comprises the yellow group?

The yellow selection is typically the most direct. Today’s theme revolves around ROUND THREE-DIMENSIONAL OBJECTS, with the words being: BALL, GLOBE, ORB, SPHERE.

And what about the green category?

The green grouping is usually the second-easiest. The theme today is PUNCH, represented by: POP, POUND, SLUG, SOCK.

What can we say about the blue words?

The blue category is considered moderately challenging. It features ANIMALS IN THE WITCHES’ BREW IN “MACBETH,” with the words being: BAT, DOG, FROG, NEWT.

Finalizing with the purple words

Lastly, the purple section is deemed the toughest. The theme is FOX___, which includes: GLOVE, HOLE, HOUND, TROT.

Approach to Solving Today’s Connections

The terms FROG, SLUG, NEWT, and BAT may collectively suggest witch-related elements such as “eye of newt.” In my attempts, I realized the accurate configurations gradually. After testing SPHERE, GLOBE, ORB, and BALL, it became evident they all share a spherical nature. 🟨

Other possibilities like SOCK, GLOVE, and BAT may hint at a baseball theme, but this felt incomplete.

The grouping SLUG, POP, POUND, and SOCK appeared to allude to a punch-related theme. Setting those aside was fruitful. 🟩

Identifying BAT, NEWT, and FROG proved successful in forming a cohesive group, implying a mystical connection. This suggests DOG fits well within the mix. 🟦 Was this once part of the ingredients in Macbeth? Indeed!

Playing the Connections Game

A comprehensive guide to Playing Connections exists, yet here’s a brief refresher:

Access the Connections game either on the New York Times website or via the Games app. You will find a board featuring 16 tiles, each representing a word or phrase. Your task is to select four tiles that possess a common attribute. Frequently, they are all of one type (e.g., RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, SNOW are types of weather), although wordplay may play a role sometimes (e.g., BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH relate to various lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

Click four items and hit the Submit button. If successful, the category and its color will surface; yellow indicates the easiest level, then green, blue, and purple in increasing difficulty. If your choice was incorrect, an opportunity to retry is provided.

A victory is achieved once all four groups are correctly identified. However, if you commit four mistakes before finishing, the game concludes and the answers will be revealed.

Winning Strategies for Connections

The key to mastering Connections lies in recognizing that the groupings are crafted to be deceptively challenging. Overlapping group themes may be present. For instance, consider a previous puzzle that encompassed six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL—but BACON ultimately belonged to a category of artists alongside CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG fit into a grouping representing things that come by the dozen (those included JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Thus, only submit once you’ve ensured that your quartet is accurate and contains exclusively those four items.

If you’re feeling stuck, consider shifting your focus to words that appear disconnected from the rest. For example, if WHISTLER draws thoughts of the iconic painting known as “Whistler’s Mother,” that’s a clue worth pursuing. Investigating whether there exists a painter named Close led to solutions for other puzzling terms in the past.

Ultimately, when in doubt, reading the offered hints can aid in your progress—hence, why these daily hints are shared. Be sure to return for tomorrow’s puzzle!
