The green category is deemed the second-easiest. It’s based on BUSTER, which includes: BUB, BUD, JACK, MAN.

Guide to Playing Connections

A detailed playing guide for Connections is available, but here’s a quick summary of the rules:

Access the Connections game either on the New York Times site or within their Games application (formerly known as the Crossword app). You will encounter a game board presenting 16 tiles, each holding a word or phrase. Your goal is to identify a set of four tiles that share a commonality. They can often denote similar types (for instance: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW represent various forms of precipitation), or sometimes involve wordplay (like BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH, which all relate to different kinds of lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

Choose four items and hit the Submit button. A correct guess reveals the category and assigns a color (yellow indicates the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple). An incorrect selection allows another attempt.

Victory is yours upon successfully identifying all four groupings. However, making four mistakes prior to completion results in the game concluding, revealing the solutions.

Winning Strategies for Connections

To succeed in Connections, understanding that each grouping can be deceiving is crucial. Overlapping connections are common. For example, a past puzzle contained six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON was part of a group of painters including CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG belonged to a grouping of items typically counted by dozens (with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH included). Therefore, ensure that your selected four exclusively pertains to the group before hitting “submit.”

If you’re feeling stuck, examining the terms that appear irrelevant to others can help. If WHISTLER only reminds you of the painting nicknamed “Whistler’s Mother,” that could be a strong lead. When solving that particular puzzle, researching Close led to an unexpected discovery since Close also didn’t fit obvious categories.

Another effective way to progress when feeling lost is to refer to these daily hints—this is precisely why such tips are shared regularly. Check back each day for new puzzle opportunities!

Happy puzzling!
