Clues for Today’s Connections Themes

Here are some hints that won’t spoil the fun for today’s groupings:

  • Yellow category – These are hour-long segments that some students catch a bus for, others are dropped off, and some may walk to.

  • Green category – Items typically encountered while on a snowy retreat.

  • Blue category – Words utilized in English that originate from other languages.

  • Purple category – These words share the same three-letter beginning.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Today’s Connections!

The answers are about to be disclosed. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid the full spoiler (the complete solution is located further down the page).

Important Notes on the Challenging Sections

Bear in mind that MOGUL does not correspond with TYCOON; MOGUL signifies a mound often associated with snowy landscapes.

DENT lacks a component necessary to complete the name of a chewing gum brand.

SLOPE and ANGLE do not belong to the same category.

Categories for Today’s Connections Puzzle

  • Yellow: SCHOOL PERIODS

  • Green: FEATURES OF A SKI RESORT

  • Blue: WORDS OF JAPANESE ORIGIN

  • Purple: WORDS FOLLOWING THE PREFIX “TRI-”

Proceed with Caution: The Solutions are Listed Below

Yellow Group Words in Today’s Connections

The yellow grouping is regarded as straightforward. The theme for today’s yellow category is SCHOOL PERIODS, which consists of: CLASS, HOMEROOM, LUNCH, RECESS.

Green Group Words in Today’s Connections

The green category is believed to be the next easiest. The theme here is FEATURES OF A SKI RESORT, including: LIFT, LODGE, MOGUL, SLOPE.

Blue Group Words in Today’s Connections

The blue category is slightly more challenging. The focus for today’s blue group is WORDS OF JAPANESE ORIGIN, which are: EMOJI, GINKGO, KARAOKE, TYCOON.

Purple Group Words in Today’s Connections

The purple group is identified as the most difficult. The category for today’s purple words is WORDS FOLLOWING THE PREFIX “TRI-,” comprising: ANGLE, CYCLE, DENT, POD.

Strategies for Solving Today’s Connections

Considering GINKGO, it refers to a species of tree, but there appear to be no other tree-related words in the mix. However, it might connect to KARAOKE and TYCOON, which share Asian roots. MOGUL could fit this context as well. I’ll revisit that one.

CLASS, LUNCH, HOMEROOM, and RECESS are clearly school periods. 🟨

LIFT, LODGE, and SLOPE correspond well to skiing terminology. Oh, isn’t MOGUL a skiing term? 🟩

For the final arrangement, I’ll choose EMOJI to accompany TYCOON, GINKGO, and KARAOKE. 🟦 Yes!

This leaves DENT, CYCLE, POD, and ANGLE. Let’s see… Acute ANGLE, sharp ANGLE, water CYCLE—everything ties back to “tri!” So, TriDENT is a gum brand, triCYCLE has three wheels, triPOD contains three legs, and triANGLE has three sides. 🟪

Playing Connections: A Brief Guide

For a complete guide to playing Connections, here’s a quick refresher on the game rules:

Access the Connections game either via the New York Times website or through their Games app (previously the Crossword app). You will be presented with a game board showing 16 tiles, each displaying a single word or phrase. Your objective is to select a collection of four tiles that share a common characteristic. They may belong to the same category (e.g., RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all forms of precipitation), or involve wordplay (e.g., BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH represent types of lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

After selecting four items, click the Submit button. If the selection is accurate, the category and color will be displayed (Yellow is the easiest, followed by green, then blue, and finally purple). If the guess is incorrect, there will be an opportunity to try again.

Victory is achieved once all four groups are identified correctly. However, if four incorrect attempts occur before completion, the game wraps up and the answers will be shown.

Winning Strategies for Connections

The key to succeeding in Connections is recognizing the inherent difficulty of the groupings. Expect to encounter overlapping connections. For instance, one puzzle may present a mix of six breakfast foods—BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON could belong to a collection of artists alongside CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG may connect with items that are typically sold by the dozen (including JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Therefore, only hit “submit” after confirming that the selected group of four encompasses only those four items.

If you find yourself stuck, investigating words that seem disconnected from the rest can be an effective strategy. For example, if the term WHISTLER immediately brings to mind the painting known as “Whistler’s Mother,” you might be on the right track. In solving that puzzle, researching whether a painter named Close existed proved helpful, as Close didn’t fit into any obvious themes either.

If difficulties persist, reading helpful hints—like those provided daily—can also assist. Be sure to check back in tomorrow for the next installment of this engaging puzzle!

Stay tuned for further puzzles and solutions in your daily game of Connections!
