Insights on Themes in Today’s Connections Game

Presented here are some hints that won’t give away too much about today’s group categories:

  • Yellow Category – Comedic elements that may be playfully mischievous.

  • Green Category – Items linked to building strength.

  • Blue Category – Wrapped items that are missing something.

  • Purple Category – A phrase completed by a word suggesting swift movement.

Important: Spoilers Ahead!

Now, the answers will be disclosed. Proceed carefully if you prefer not to uncover everything just yet. (The complete resolution is located further down the page.)

A Caution About Challenging Aspects

Note that JOKER relates to humor and jokes, not to playing cards.

While SNICKER and LAUGH appear similar, they serve different contexts; SNICKER is a type of candy.

BUMP suggests something encountered when a vehicle rolls over a slight obstruction.

Categories for Today’s Connections

  • Yellow: COMEDIC CHARACTERS

  • Green: STRENGTH TRAINING TOOLS

  • Blue: CANDY WITHOUT “S”

  • Purple: QUICKNESS ___

DOUBLE WARNING: ANSWERS BELOW

Ready to discover the answers for today’s Connections puzzle? Here they are.

Yellow Group Words

The yellow category is generally deemed the simplest. The theme encompasses COMEDIC CHARACTERS, featuring the words: CARD, CHARACTER, JOKER, LAUGH.

Green Group Words

The green sector is identified as the second-easiest. Under the theme of STRENGTH TRAINING TOOLS, we have: BAND, BENCH, DUMBBELL, MAT.

Blue Group Words

The blue subset ranks as the second-most challenging. The category of CANDY WITHOUT “S” includes: AIRHEAD, MAR, MOUND, SNICKER.

Purple Group Words

The hardest group falls under QUICKNESS ___, consisting of the items: BUMP, CHESS, DEMON, DIAL.

Approach to Resolving Today’s Connections

Initially, a clear theme emerges, albeit with some overlaps: the candy brands, omitting the “s” at the end; AIRHEAD, SNICKER, MAR, MOUND can all fit here. Furthermore, JOKER, AIRHEAD, and CHARACTER can be categorized as playful personas, with SNICKER and LAUGH related to acts of laughter.

Starting with the candy group seems logical since it presents a complete set of four items. 🟦

The next observation is that BAND (as in resistance band), MAT, BENCH, and DUMBBELL connect as gym essentials. 🟩

JOKER and CARD might suggest a relation, although nothing else particularly invokes card games. CHESS comes close but feels offbeat.

There’s also a possibility of a tarot card category that includes JOKER (“the fool”), CHESS (“the tower”), and DEMON (“the devil”), yet this remains uncertain.

Considering DEMON, JOKER, CHARACTER, and CARD denotes amusing or mischievous personalities feels plausible, but LAUGH is probably a necessary inclusion. Testing with CHARACTER, CARD, LAUGH, and JOKER works fine. 🟨

This leaves BUMP, DEMON, DIAL, and CHESS. The subtle connections to a BUMP in the road, CHESS piece dynamics, and DIAL turning yields confusion. Recognizing that BUMP perhaps links to SPEED ___. Is Speed Chess a valid connection? Apparently, it simply involves chess with stricter time controls.

Instructions for Playing Connections

A complete guide on how to play Connections is available, but here’s a brief refresher:

Begin by accessing the Connections game, found either on the New York Times website or through their Games app (previously known as the Crossword app). The game displays a board with 16 tiles, each labeled with a word or phrase. The objective is to identify a set of four tiles that share a common theme. The connections can sometimes align in straightforward categories (for example, RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of precipitation), or they might involve clever wordplay (for instance, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH signify types of lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

After selecting four words, click the Submit button. If the guess is correct, the category and color will be displayed (yellow indicates the simplest links, followed by green, blue, and purple). Incorrect guesses allow you another attempt.

Victory is achieved once all four groups are accurately identified; however, making four errors prior to completion concludes the game and reveals the answers.

Strategies for Winning Connections

To succeed at Connections, it’s vital to understand that the categories are crafted to be challenging. Expect overlapping themes. For instance, one past puzzle contained six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. Ultimately, BACON turned out to belong to a category of artists alongside CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG was categorized with things typically found in dozens (including JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Therefore, be certain to not submit your guesses until you have verified that the four selected words exclusively form that group.

If encountering a mental block, examining words that seem unrelated to others can be beneficial. If WHISTLER only invokes the famous painting known as “Whistler’s Mother,” it could indicate a potential path forward. In previous instances, clarifying whether a painter named Close existed opened doors when struggling with similar themes.

Should challenges persist, relying on external hints—like those provided here—could prove advantageous. Be sure to return tomorrow for the upcoming puzzle!

Stay tuned for more insights and strategies to enhance your gameplay experience!
