Insights on Today’s Connections Themes

Below are some non-spoiler hints related to the categories in today’s Connections puzzle:

  • Green category – A small quantity.

  • Blue category – These appear after the official title.

  • Purple category – Repetitions create well-known phrases.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Today’s Connections!

At this point, answers will be disclosed. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid full disclosure (detailed solutions lie further down).

Caution on Challenging Elements

Disregard all tiles beginning with “A”; this is not a valid theme.

MADRIGAL pertains to a musical style dating back to the Renaissance.

Today’s puzzle doesn’t feature intricate wordplay or cultural references, but the blue and purple categories might still pose challenges.

A LIFE frequently follows a person’s name in a biography title.

A DEAL is part of a common phrase often initiated with a handshake.

Categories for Today’s Connections

  • Yellow: VOCAL MUSIC

  • Green: A HANDFUL OF

  • Blue: BOOK SUBTITLES

  • Purple: ___ IS ___ (IS ___)

Double Warning: The Solutions Follow

Prepared to uncover today’s Connection answers? The revelations commence below.

Yellow Word Group for Today’s Connections

The yellow category is deemed the most straightforward. Its theme revolves around VOCAL MUSIC, comprising: A CAPPELLA, BARBERSHOP, DOO-WOP, and MADRIGAL.

Green Word Group for Today’s Connections

The green category is slightly more challenging. The theme here is A HANDFUL OF, featuring: A FEW, CERTAIN, SOME, and VARIOUS.

Blue Word Group for Today’s Connections

Classified as the second toughest, the blue category’s theme relates to BOOK SUBTITLES with words: A LIFE, A NOVEL, ESSAYS, and PART ONE.

Purple Word Group for Today’s Connections

The purple category is the challenging one. Its theme is structured as ___ IS ___ (IS ___) with the words: A DEAL, A ROSE, ENOUGH, and LOVE.

Decoding Today’s Connections

The group of A CAPPELLA, DOO-WOP, BARBERSHOP, and MADRIGAL clearly aligns under group singing styles. That seemed like a logical first choice. 🟨

Considering A FEW and SOME as basic synonyms makes sense. CERTAIN, VARIOUS, and ENOUGH also fit alongside but trying to pinpoint which to discard is tricky. It appears ENOUGH might be the outlier, so let’s select CERTAIN, VARIOUS, A FEW, and SOME. 🟩

The titles PART ONE, A NOVEL, ESSAYS, and A LIFE jump out as common elements following a colon in titles—like in Dune: Part One. 🟦 Great!

The final four are also recognizable as they can form repeated sayings: “A DEAL is A DEAL,” “LOVE is LOVE,” “A ROSE is a ROSE is a ROSE,” and “ENOUGH is ENOUGH.” 🟪

Playing Connections: A Quick Overview

A full guide to playing Connections is available, but here’s a brief refresher on how to play:

You can find the Connections game either on the New York Times website or through their Games app (previously the Crossword app). Upon accessing the game board, you’ll see 16 tiles, each displaying a word or phrase. The goal is to identify a set of four tiles that share a common theme. These often represent similar items (e.g., RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW—which are weather types), but at times, wordplay comes into play (e.g., BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are various kinds of lists like bucket lists, guest lists, etc.).

Select your four choices and click on the Submit button. If all four belong together, the corresponding category and color will appear (Yellow is the easiest category, followed by green, blue, and purple). If the guess is incorrect, you will have an opportunity to retry.

A victory occurs when you successfully identify all four groups. However, if you make four wrong attempts before completing the puzzle, the game will conclude, revealing the answers.

Winning Strategies for Connections

To succeed in Connections, it’s essential to be aware that the groupings tend to be deceptive. Overlapping sets can appear frequently. For instance, one puzzle blended six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. Ultimately, BACON was tied to a category of painters including CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG was categorized with items typically counted by the dozen (including JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So, refrain from hitting “submit” until it’s confirmed that all four selected items share a unified connection.

If the game poses a challenge, a helpful tactic is to examine the words that appear unrelated to the rest. For example, if WHISTLER brings to mind the famous painting “Whistler’s Mother,” it may lead to a connection. In such puzzles, external searches are often beneficial, like confirming if there’s a painter named Close, especially when Close does not fit any obvious themes.

Should you get stuck, seeking out a few useful hints can also help—hence these daily tips that are shared. Return tomorrow for the next puzzle!

Stay engaged with the puzzles and sharpen your puzzle-solving skills. Good luck!
