Hints for Today’s Connections Themes

Here are spoiler-free insights about the themes for today’s Connections:

  • Yellow category – They can poke you.
  • Green category – Features found on string instruments.
  • Blue category – Common terms used within a courtroom.
  • Purple category – A classic poem used to make wishes known to the cosmos.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

We’re about to disclose some answers. Scroll cautiously if you wish to avoid major spoilers. (The complete solution can be found a bit further down.)

Notice About the Challenging Aspects

None of the names appearing on the board are actual names.

SPINE refers to something akin to what a porcupine possesses.

A STRING is an object that can be plucked, and a PEG is its attachment point.

Reflect on a nighttime prayer-like nursery rhyme for today’s purple category.

Identifying Today’s Categories in Connections

  • Yellow: SHARP PROTRUSION
  • Green: FEATURES OF STRINGED INSTRUMENTS
  • Blue: LITIGATION ACTIONS
  • Purple: IN “STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT”

Double Caution: Solutions Listed Below

Prepared to uncover the answers to today’s Connections puzzle? Here they are!

Yellow Words in Today’s Connections

The yellow group is deemed the simplest. Its theme is SHARP PROTRUSION, including the words: BARB, BRISTLE, NEEDLE, SPINE.

Green Words in Today’s Connections

The green grouping is considered the second-easiest. The theme for this set is FEATURES OF STRINGED INSTRUMENTS, consisting of: BRIDGE, NECK, PEG, STRING.

Blue Words in Today’s Connections

Blue is the second hardest grouping. This category entails LITIGATION ACTIONS, featuring: CHARGE, MOVE, SERVE, SUE.

Purple Words in Today’s Connections

The purple group is recognized as the most challenging. Its theme is IN “STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT,” with the words: MAY, MIGHT, TONIGHT, WISH.

Insights into Solving Today’s Connections

While many names appear on the board, they likely serve as distractions.

BARB could either refer to Barbara or serve as a synonym for SPINE, NEEDLE, and BRISTLE. 🟨

Similarly, MAY, MIGHT, and WISH connect as expressions of hopes or desires.

What do you think about this puzzle so far?

The terms STRING, NECK, BRIDGE, and PEG likely pertain to parts of a guitar. 🟩

It’s clear now: MAY, MIGHT, WISH, and TONIGHT are derived from the classic nursery rhyme “star light, star bright, first star I see tonight,” and so forth. 🟪

This leaves SUE, SERVE, MOVE, and CHARGE, all of which relate to actions in legal proceedings. 🟦

Understanding Connections Gameplay

A comprehensive guide to playing Connections is available, but here’s a brief overview of the rules:

First, access the Connections game either on the New York Times website or via their Games app (previously known as the Crossword app). You will encounter a game board with 16 squares, each showcasing a word or phrase. Your objective is to identify a set of four squares that share a commonality. Generally, they are all of a similar type (for instance: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW all categorize as weather types), but sometimes wordplay is involved (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH constitute various kinds of lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

Select four items and press the Submit button. If your selection is accurate, the category and color will illuminate. (From easiest to hardest: Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple.) If incorrect, you’ll be granted another opportunity to guess.

You achieve victory after successfully identifying all four groups. However, if you make four erroneous attempts before completing, the game concludes, revealing the solution.

Strategies for Winning Connections

The key to mastering Connections lies in understanding that the groupings are intentionally designed to challenge you. Expect to see intersecting groups. For instance, one puzzle included six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON was part of a collection of painters alongside CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG belonged to a group referring to items that come by the dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Therefore, do not hit “submit” until you are certain that your selected four contain only those four elements.

If you’re feeling stuck, another effective strategy is to examine the words that appear disconnected from the rest. If WHISTLER reminds you solely of the painting known as “Whistler’s Mother,” you might be on the brink of a solution. During one of my attempts, I ended up researching whether there was a painter named Close, as Close didn’t fit any apparent themes either.

Lastly, when at an impasse, seeking out a few helpful hints—like the ones provided daily—can be incredibly beneficial. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the next puzzle!

Happy puzzling!
