WARNING: Spoilers Ahead for Today’s Connections

Answers are revealed in this section. Proceed carefully if you prefer to avoid spoilers (the complete solution is further down the page).

Important Notes on the Challenging Sections

For today, BERMUDA, CHINA, PANAMA, and BRAZIL fit into distinct categories.

CHINA refers to high-quality dinnerware.

CLUE is a film adapted from the well-known board game.

BOXER signifies a style of underwear one might choose over briefs.

Today’s Categories in Connections

  • Yellow: MATERIALS LINKED TO UPSCALE DINING

  • Green: VARIETIES OF SHORTS

  • Blue: NOUNS FOUND IN A FAMOUS PALINDROME

  • Purple: FILMS RELEASED IN 1985

DOUBLE WARNING: SOLUTIONS BELOW

Excited to uncover the answers to today’s Connections puzzle? They are detailed below.

Yellow Words in Today’s Connections

The yellow section is recognized as the simplest. Its theme centers on MATERIALS LINKED TO UPSCALE DINING, including: CHINA, CRYSTAL, LINEN, SILVER.

Green Words in Today’s Connections

The green grouping ranks as the second simplest. The theme here is VARIETIES OF SHORTS, comprising: BERMUDA, BIKE, BOXER, CARGO.

Blue Words in Today’s Connections

This blue category is considered moderately challenging. The theme is NOUNS FOUND IN A FAMOUS PALINDROME, consisting of: CANAL, MAN, PANAMA, PLAN.

Purple Words in Today’s Connections

The purple category is identified as the hardest. Today’s theme pertains to FILMS RELEASED IN 1985 and includes: BRAZIL, CLUE, COMMANDO, WITNESS.

Solving Today’s Connections Puzzle

The word CARGO instantly brings to mind CARGO shorts, especially in conjunction with BIKE and BOXER, which also denote types of shorts. And then there’s BERMUDA! 🟩

WITNESS and CLUE may relate as components of a mystery.

There are connections among CHINA, BRAZIL, and PANAMA, as they are countries, but a specific association seems elusive, given that BERMUDA has already been categorized.

What are your thoughts on this puzzle?

Materials such as SILVER, CRYSTAL, and LINEN suggest a common theme, but identifying the fourth was tricky.

Aha! MAN, PLAN, CANAL, and PANAMA all relate to a well-known palindrome! However, the puzzle utilizes only the essential words. 🟦

The realization hits: CHINA could also represent dishware, connecting it to CRYSTAL, SILVER, and LINEN, further reinforcing the theme. 🟨

This leaves BRAZIL, CLUE, WITNESS, and COMMANDO—certainly connected, possibly through famous films or stories. 🟪 Upon realization, these indeed represent movies from 1985. The only one I’ve watched from that list is CLUE.

Playing Connections: A Brief Overview

A comprehensive guide for playing Connections exists, but here’s a quick refresher on the fundamentals:

You can find the Connections game on the New York Times website or through their Games app (formerly known as the Crossword app). A game board displays 16 tiles, each featuring a word or phrase. Your task is to identify a group of four tiles sharing a commonality. Often, these will share a category (for instance, RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are types of precipitation), though some puzzles may use wordplay (e.g., BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are related to various lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

Once you’ve chosen four items, click the Submit button. If your guess is correct, the category and its color will appear (Yellow indicates the easiest level, followed by Green, Blue, then Purple). An incorrect guess allows a retry.

You win once you have correctly identified all four categories. However, making four wrong guesses results in the game ending, revealing the answers.

Winning Strategies for Connections

The key to mastering Connections lies in recognizing that the categories may be cleverly designed. Expect overlapping themes. For instance, one puzzle featured six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON turned out to group with painters like CLOSE and WHISTLER, while EGG was part of things available by the dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Therefore, it’s crucial to ensure your selected four items are exclusively those four.

If stuck, look for words that seem unrelated to the rest. If WHISTLER brings to mind the painting known as “Whistler’s Mother,” it might lead you to the right path. During that particular puzzle, researching if there was a painter named Close helped uncover the connections.

When in doubt, seeking hints can be immensely helpful—this is why daily tips are provided. Be sure to return tomorrow for the next intriguing puzzle!
