The Risks Facing Google Pixel 6a: Safety Concerns and What Users Should Know

In today’s tech-centric world, smartphones are expected to perform reliably in various tasks: from connecting to the internet and making phone calls to providing GPS navigation. However, one thing that should never happen is for a phone to pose a fire hazard. Strangely, this basic expectation seems to have slipped through the cracks for some versions of the Google Pixel.

Recent findings from Android Authority indicate that a limited number of Pixel devices are experiencing alarming issues related to combustion. While only a handful of cases—five to be precise—have been documented in relation to the Pixel 6a over the past year, this trend is still troubling enough for Google to have released a software update aimed at enhancing battery management. This recent update aims to alleviate pressure on aging batteries by throttling performance significantly. A similar update was issued for the Pixel 4a earlier in the year, also with safety in mind.

These types of measures present a challenging dilemma: it’s critical to ensure that smartphones remain safe to use, especially if there’s a risk for the batteries to ignite. However, reducing performance to mitigate this risk can lead to a frustrating user experience, where some Pixel 4a and 6a devices may run so slowly they become nearly unusable.

Shockingly, it seems that the latest software patch has not completely eliminated the risk of fire for all Pixel 6a devices. Reports indicate that prior to the July update, Android Authority had identified four incidents of devices catching fire, with a fifth occurring merely two weeks post-update. A user recounted their disturbing experience in a Reddit post, revealing they awoke to a “horrible smell and loud sounds,” only to find their Pixel 6a engulfed in flames. In a panic, they yanked the device from the nightstand by the charging cord, but not before it set their bedding ablaze, leading to throat irritation from inhaling the fumes.

The Reddit user confirmed that they had installed the recent update, suggesting that whatever changes were made to the battery management system, often referred to by users as a “battery nerf,” did not prevent this incident. The individual was using a Steam Deck charger, a robust power adapter with 45W output, yet there should be no cause for alarm with such a charger under normal circumstances.

What to Do If You Own a Pixel 6a

If your Pixel 6a is currently in view and you’re concerned about potential overheating or smoke, it’s prudent to take some precautions. The first step is to ensure that the latest battery management update is installed. While this update might come at the cost of device performance, it can significantly reduce the battery fire risk—though, as illustrated by the Reddit user’s experience, it may not be foolproof. Users should also assess their battery’s condition, as underlying issues could still pose hazards.

In addition to the update, consider exploring Google’s battery replacement initiative. If eligible, users can receive a complimentary battery replacement for their Pixel 6a. Individuals residing in the U.S., Canada, UK, Germany, Singapore, Japan, or India can take their device to a Google-authorized repairshop or send it via mail in select locations. For further details, visit Google’s battery replacement program page.

Above all, any device that exhibits symptoms of battery distress—such as swelling, unusual heat, or smoke—should not be plugged in. Instead, if possible, turn off the device and take it to a tech recycling facility for safe disposal.
