How to Enjoy Quordle
Quordle can be played here on the Merriam-Webster platform, where a fresh puzzle is available each day.
This game offers a unique challenge derived from the popular Wordle on The New York Times’ website, where players guess a five-letter secret word within a limited number of attempts. In Quordle, however, the challenge escalates as players tackle four Wordle-style puzzles at the same time, with each guess affecting all four simultaneously. To accommodate the added complexity, players receive nine attempts (or 12 in “Chill” mode, and eight in “Extreme” mode”), in contrast to Wordle’s six attempts.
To get started, enter a five-letter word. The letters in each of the four sections will be highlighted in green if correct, yellow if they belong to the word but are incorrectly positioned, and gray if they are not part of the word at all.

Solving Today’s Quordle
Beginning with SLATE, the next guess was MOUND to uncover more common letters. Progress was definitely being made.
The upper right word could potentially be JOINT, but it was close—POINT was the correct guess!
In the lower right, APHID was confirmed correctly too.
Next was the upper right again, resulting in MERIT. Things were looking good!
The lower left posed more of a challenge. Perhaps something like HOPPY? That was an incorrect guess since I mistakenly placed the O in a position already known to be wrong. It might end with PH, but words finishing in OPH were elusive.
Maybe ending with just P would allow the H to fit at the start. WHOOP? Success!

Optimal Initial Guesses for Quordle
What should be your first guess? Insights from Wordle offer useful guidance.
Effective starters typically feature commonly used letters, heightening the chances of revealing yellow or green squares that aid in subsequent guesses. While there isn’t a universally acclaimed starting word, the New York Times’s Wordle analysis tool has indicated these options:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
Meanwhile, research from MIT has shown that starting with options like these will maximize elimination of possibilities in the first round:
- SALET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
Other solid choices include ARISE or ROUND. While words like ADIEU and AUDIO introduce more vowels into play, there is an argument for beginning with consonants instead, using words like RENTS or CLAMP. Formulate your strategy and see how it develops.
