Spotify Introduces Voice Requests to Its AI DJ Feature
Spotify’s AI DJ can be likened to an imaginative evolution of ChatGPT. This digital DJ crafts personalized music playlists for Premium users by drawing on their listening history, incorporating both contemporary hits and classic tunes. An intriguing element of this feature is the DJ’s voice, which not only announces the upcoming tracks but also shares insights about them. Regardless of one’s stance on artificial intelligence, this addition appears to be harmless and entertaining for those paying for Spotify’s services.
While the DJ creates a semblance of interactivity, the experience remains largely passive—users can skip tracks, but there isn’t much beyond that. However, this is set to change: in a recent blog update, Spotify unveiled a feature that allows subscribers to issue voice commands to the DJ. If a user enjoys the curated playlist but has a particular song, genre, or atmosphere in mind, they can now verbally ask the DJ to accommodate their request.
A video accompanying the press release showcased users making requests, such as, “DJ, I need some morning motivation… play some dance-pop.” The DJ complies, responding with, “No problem. Here’s some LISA.” In another instance, a user requested a nostalgic vibe, prompting the DJ to play Tate McRae, capturing the essence of the Y2K era.
Spotify highlighted a few example requests that showcase the versatility of this feature:
-
“Surprise me with some indie tracks I haven’t heard before.”
-
“Give me some electronic beats for my midday run.”
-
“Play me some songs to cry to in the car.”
According to Spotify, voice requests for the DJ are currently accessible in English to Premium subscribers across more than 60 regions. If the DJ functionality is enabled on your account, the voice request feature will also be available.
