Strategy for Solving Today’s Strands
The phrase “All decked out” could suggest stylish fashion, but it may also simply refer to a patio deck where one could enjoy a drink or host a barbecue (looking forward to summer!).
In my pursuit of words, I’ve identified some non-themed terms: IMPACT, BARS, CHAR, PAST.
In the upper left section, there is definitely something starting with “CH.” Is it PINCH? No, it’s actually PINOCHLE, a card game. 🔵 Thus, the theme alludes to a deck of cards!
It seems that the spangram relates to card games. Indeed, the layout from bottom to top spells out CARDGAMES. 🟡
POKER is located in the bottom left corner. 🔵
RUMMY appears along the right side, positioned centrally. 🔵
EUCHRE is situated in the lower right corner. 🔵

How to Engage with Strands
The Strands game can be found on the New York Times website and also on the NYT Games app.
Upon starting, a game board will appear filled with a collection of letters, accompanied by a clue that hints at the theme of the board—this may be a phrase like “Better with age.” Your task is to locate the hidden words that resonate with the puzzle’s theme.
A Blending of Crossword and Word Search
The primary word to uncover is the “spangram,” which provides a clear reference to the puzzle’s theme. (For instance, the spangram corresponding to a theme of “Better with age” is FERMENTED, denoting items that improve over time.) The spangram spans the entire board either horizontally or vertically (thus the name). Once identified, it will be highlighted in yellow and makes completing the rest of the puzzle significantly easier.
Within Strands, words can be arranged in any direction (upward, downward, sideways, or diagonally), and each letter can only be employed once. There is a single definitive solution. Identifying a word correctly (like KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI) causes it to be highlighted in blue.
If difficulties arise while solving, players can submit any non-themed words they notice (as long as they consist of four letters or more) to earn a hint. By submitting three non-themed words, the “Hint” feature becomes accessible; clicking it will reveal some letters of one theme word. These highlighted letters must then be correctly sequenced to form the theme word. Should there already be a hint on the board and another is requested without having solved that word, the letter sequence of that word will be disclosed.
Winning Strands
Unlike games such as Connections or Wordle, failure is not an option in Strands. When submitting guesses, you will either provide a correct answer, earn hint credits, or the input will shake, indicating that the word submitted is either too short or invalid. There is no limit to guesses, and no timer restricts gameplay.
You achieve victory by successfully utilizing all letters in the board, signifying that you have uncovered the spangram along with all associated theme words. Similar to other NYT games, after completing the puzzle, a shareable card is provided detailing your performance for the day: blue dots 🔵 represent the theme words identified, the yellow dot 🟡 signifies the spangram found, and a lightbulb 💡 denotes words that prompted hints.
