Playing Strands
The Strands game is available on the New York Times website and also through the NYT Games app.
Upon commencing, players encounter a game board filled with various letters, alongside a clue hinting at the theme—often presented as a phrase, such as “Better with age.” The goal is to uncover hidden words within the board that align with the puzzle’s theme.
A Mix of Crossword and Word Search
The spangram is the key word that articulates the puzzle’s theme more clearly. For instance, with a theme like “Better with age,” the spangram is FERMENTED, referring to items that indeed improve over time. This spangram stretches across the entire board, either horizontally or vertically. Discovering the spangram typically simplifies the rest of the puzzle.
In Strands, words can be oriented in any direction (up, down, horizontally, diagonally), utilizing each letter just once. Every puzzle has a single correct solution. When a word is correctly identified, such as KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI, it is marked in blue.
If difficulties arise while solving the puzzle, submitting any non-theme words of four letters or more can earn hints. Identifying three non-theme words makes the “Hint” button active. Clicking it will highlight letters from one of the theme words, although those letters still need to be connected in the correct sequence. Utilizing additional hints before completing a word will reveal the letter order of that word.
Winning Strands
Unlike other games like Connections or Wordle, failure is not an option in Strands. When guesses are submitted, outcomes will either confirm answers, grant hint credits, or shake the input to signal invalid guesses. There’s no limit on attempts, nor is there a time constraint.
Victory is achieved when all letters on the board are appropriately utilized, indicating that both the spangram and all relevant theme words have been identified. Upon solving, a shareable card is generated that displays your daily performance: blue dots 🔵 mark found theme words, the yellow dot 🟡 highlights the spangram, and a lightbulb 💡 indicates words received via hints.
