Strategy for Solving Today’s Strands
The puzzle theme is quite charming! Initially, it may be unclear what specific attributes to focus on—perhaps features of elves such as pointed ears or whimsical footwear? Notable elf characters, like Legolas, might also come to mind.
The word FAIRY appears in the upper right section, confirming its inclusion. 🔵
In the bottom left corner, PIXIE is located. 🔵 This points to words relating to elvin characteristics—adorable fantasy entities with ears (and possibly wings).
To the right of PIXIE stands SPRITE. 🔵
GOBLIN follows to the right of SPRITE but does not fulfill the criteria, likely being part of the spangram. Alternatively, it fits within HOBGOBLIN. 🔵
The spangram identified is IMPISH. 🟡
GREMLIN is positioned left of FAIRY. 🔵
Finally, there’s LEPRECHAUN. 🔵

Playing Strands
To engage with the Strands game, navigate to the New York Times website or access it through the NYT Games app.
Upon initiation, a game board filled with letters will be displayed, accompanied by a clue hinting at the theme—a phrase like “Better with age.” The objective is to uncover the hidden words in the letter grid that correspond to the theme indicated.
A Fusion of Crossword and Word Search
The key word to seek after is the “spangram,” which encapsulates the essence of the puzzle theme more explicitly. (For instance, in the case of a theme like “Better with age,” the spangram can be FERMENTED, pertaining to items that benefit with time.) The spangram spans across the entire board, whether horizontally or vertically. When discovered, it will be highlighted in yellow. Solving for the spangram generally facilitates the completion of the remainder of the puzzle.
Words in Strands can curve in any direction—upward, downward, sideways, or diagonally—while each letter is utilized only once. There exists a singular correct resolution. Upon identifying one of the puzzle’s words (like KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI), it will be marked in blue.
If facing difficulties with the puzzle, non-theme words with four letters or more can be submitted to gain a hint. Upon entering three non-theme words, the “Hint” feature becomes accessible. Engaging it will illuminate all letters of one theme word, yet the positioning must still be arranged correctly to form that word. Should there be an existing hint in play and another be utilized without solving the previous word, the letter sequence for that word will be disclosed.
Winning Strands
Distinctively, unlike Connections and Wordle, failing to solve Strands is not a concern. When submitting guesses, results will include accurately identified answers, hints accumulated, or a shake effect indicating an invalid or too-short word entry. There are no limits on attempts or time constraints present.
Victory is secured once all letters on the board are effectively employed, thereby confirming the spangram and each theme word. Similar to other NYT games, upon solving the puzzle, a shareable card will display your performance: blue dots 🔵 represent theme words identified, the yellow dot 🟡 stands for the spangram discovery, and a lightbulb 💡 signifies words for which hints were received.
