Playing Strands: A Guide
The Strands game can be accessed on the New York Times website or via the NYT Games application.
Upon starting a game, a board filled with an assortment of letters will be presented alongside a clue hinting at the theme of the board, manifested as a phrase like “Better with age.” The objective is to uncover the hidden words that relate to the given theme.
A Blend of Crossword and Word Search
A critical aspect is identifying the “spangram,” which provides a more direct indication of the puzzle’s theme. For instance, the spangram for a theme like “Better with age” is FERMENTED, as it refers to products enhanced by aging. The spangram will extend across the board, either horizontally or vertically (hence the name). Once discovered, it will be highlighted in yellow, assisting in completing the rest of the puzzle.
Words in Strands may be arranged in any direction—up, down, left, right, or diagonally—with each letter being utilized once. There is only a single correct solution for each puzzle. Correct guesses will be marked in blue (for example, KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI).
In case of difficulty, submitting any non-theme words of four letters or longer can grant a hint. Provide three non-theme words, and the “Hint” button will become available; clicking it will reveal all letters in one theme word, which will still need to be connected in the correct sequence. Should there already be a hint on the board, using a new one before solving that word will disclose the letter order of that word.
Winning Strands: Meeting the Challenge
Unlike Connections or Wordle, Strands does not feature a failure mode. Upon submitting guesses, players will either correctly identify a word, gain credit for a hint, or receive feedback indicating the submission was invalid (by shaking text). There are no limitations on guesses or time constraints.
A win occurs when all letters in the board have been correctly identified, meaning both the spangram and all theme words have been completed. Upon solving, a summary card indicating daily performance will be displayed: blue dots 🔵 signify theme words identified, the yellow dot 🟡 shows when the spangram was discovered, and a lightbulb 💡 indicates words aided by hints.
