Strategy for Solving Today’s Strands Puzzle

The initial task is to identify which words to pursue. Given the theme “closure,” it likely points towards items that close things, such as zippers and buttons.

Right away, ZIPPER appears in the bottom left section. 🔵

BUTTON is located in the upper right quadrant. 🔵

Above it is SNAPS. 🔵

Interestingly, the word VENEERS caught my eye, though it doesn’t fit the theme. LOCK is also present, but it doesn’t belong to the theme either. It could fit into the spangram.

MAGNET can be found in the bottom right. 🔵

Looking across, the revealed spangram is FASTENERS—spanning from left to right. 🟡

VELCRO follows. 🔵

Then comes BUCKLE. 🔵 No need for LOCK after all!

Finally, we have CLASP. 🔵

Playing Strands

The Strands game can be accessed via the New York Times website and the NYT Games app.

Upon beginning, a game board filled with letters will appear alongside a hint that suggests the board’s theme—a phrase, such as “Better with age.” Your task is to uncover the hidden words in alignment with the puzzle’s theme.

A Unique Blend of Crossword and Word Search

The pivotal word to discover is the “spangram,” a term that directly represents the theme. For instance, if the theme is “Better with age,” the spangram could be FERMENTED, describing products that indeed get better with time. This spangram will span either horizontally or vertically across the board, thus the name. Identifying the spangram usually simplifies the completion of the rest of the puzzle.

In Strands, words can align in any direction (up, down, left, right, and diagonal), with each letter being utilized a single time. The puzzle has only one correct configuration. Once a word, such as KOMBUCHA or KIMCHI, is identified, it appears highlighted in blue.

If you’re having difficulty, you have the option to submit any non-theme words you see (provided they are four letters or longer) to earn a hint. Submitting three non-theme words activates the “Hint” button; clicking it will highlight letters corresponding to one of the theme words. You then have to connect those highlighted letters in the correct sequence. If there’s an existing hint you haven’t used yet, and you later utilize another hint prior to solving that word, the letter order of that word will be revealed.

Winning Strands

Unlike other games such as Connections and Wordle, Strands cannot be lost. Submitting guesses yields one of three outcomes: correctly identifying a word, receiving credit towards a hint, or triggering a visual shake indicating the submitted word is invalid or too short. There is no limit to your guesses, nor is there a timer.

Victory is achieved upon correctly using all letters on the board, successfully identifying both the spangram and all theme words. At the end of each puzzle, a shareable card displaying the day’s performance is available: blue dots 🔵 signify theme words found, the yellow dot 🟡 indicates when the spangram was discovered, and a lightbulb 💡 shows words that corresponded to hints received.

Embrace the challenge and enjoy solving today’s Strands puzzle!
