Strategy for Solving Today’s Strands

Initially, a few unrelated words like SENILE, SHELL, and SELL appeared, but they didn’t fit the theme. An assumption was made that the puzzle might relate to cars (considering terms like drive, reverse, neutral, etc.), but that didn’t seem to pan out.

However, recognizing CREAM in the top row was a breakthrough. 🔵 This suggested an emphasis on neutral colors.

Thus, it was indeed EGGSHELL, not merely SHELL. 🔵

VANILLA made its appearance in the upper right corner. 🔵

CHAMPAGNE was placed in the bottom right corner as well. 🔵

And off to the left, the spangram came together: OFFWHITES. 🟡

LINEN lined up neatly at the bottom of the spangram. 🔵

Finally, IVORY joined the collection. 🔵

Playing Strands

The Strands game is accessible via the New York Times website and the NYT Games app.

Once initiated, players encounter a grid filled with letters, alongside a hint that points to the overarching theme—typically framed as a phrase, such as “Better with age.” The objective is to unearth the concealed terms within the grid that correspond to the given theme.

A Crossword and Word Search Fusion

The key term to identify is the “spangram,” a word closely reflecting the puzzle’s central theme. (For instance, in a puzzle themed “Better with age,” the spangram is FERMENTED, corresponding to items that indeed are more appealing over time.) The spangram stretches across the grid either horizontally or vertically (which is where it gets its name). Once discovered, it will be highlighted in yellow, facilitating further puzzle completion.

In Strands, words may be oriented in any direction—up, down, sideways, or diagonally—and each letter can only be utilized once. The puzzle offers a single correct answer. Successfully identifying a puzzle word (like KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI) will highlight it in blue.

Should there be difficulty in solving, players can submit non-themed words comprising four letters or more, which will then count as partial credit towards a hint. Submitting three such words makes the “Hint” button actionable; upon clicking it, all letters of one theme word will become highlighted. However, it will still be necessary to connect these highlighted letters in the correct sequence to form one of the thematic words. If a hint is already in play when another is used before the word has been solved, the letter arrangement for that particular word will be disclosed.

Achieving Victory in Strands

Unlike other games such as Connections and Wordle, Strands has no failure mechanism. When guesses are submitted, players either correctly identify a word, earn hint credit, or receive feedback that the submitted entry is either too short or invalid via a shaking text animation. There’s no limited number of attempts or time constraint.

Victory happens when every letter on the grid has been utilized, meaning the spangram and all essential words have been discovered. Upon successfully solving the puzzle, participants will receive a shareable card indicating their daily performance: blue dots 🔵 signify theme words found, a yellow dot 🟡 denotes discovery of the spangram, and a lightbulb 💡 marks words for which hints were received.
