Analyzing today’s puzzle theme brings to mind the notion of vintage video games; however, the “-iversary” aspect presents a mild confusion. Is this referencing games from a specific year? That seems rather particular.
The word STRING emerges first, prominent along the bottom row, and it proves to be correct.

Playing Strands: A Guide
The Strands game is available on the New York Times website and within the NYT Games application.
Upon starting, players encounter a game board filled with various letters alongside a clue hinting at the overarching theme—phrases like “Better with age.” The aim is to discover hidden words within the board that align with the theme.
A Unique Blend of Crossword and Word Search
The key term to identify is the “spangram,” a word that encapsulates the theme more explicitly. For instance, in the puzzle themed “Better with age,” the spangram is FERMENTED, describing items that are improved with age. The spangram extends across the entire game board, whether horizontally or vertically (thus its name). Highlighting the spangram in yellow indicates its discovery, often simplifying the rest of the puzzle.
In Strands, words can be oriented in any direction (upwards, downwards, left, right, diagonal), and every letter can only be utilized once. There exists a single correct answer. The successful identification of a word (like KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI) will highlight it in blue.
For players facing difficulties, submissions of any non-theme words (as long as they contain four letters or more) may grant a hint. Three non-theme words provided will enable the “Hint” button. If clicked, one letter from a theme word will be highlighted, aiding towards forming that word—though the order must still be arranged correctly. Should a hint already be active, using another hint afterwards will reveal the letter arrangement for that word.
