How to Engage with Strands
The Strands game can be sought on the New York Times website as well as through the NYT Games app.
As you dive into the game, you’ll encounter a board filled with various letters, complemented by a clue hinting at the theme—usually a phrase such as “Better with age.” Your task is to uncover hidden words within the grid that align with the designated theme.
A Unique Blend of Crossword and Word Search
The primary focus is to seek out the “spangram,” a word that succinctly expresses the essence of the puzzle’s theme. For example, if the puzzle centers on “Better with age,” the spangram would be FERMENTED, indicating that such products improve over time. The spangram stretches across the game board, either horizontally or vertically (hence the term). Locating the spangram typically simplifies completing the rest of the puzzle.
In Strands, words may appear in any direction (upward, downward, leftward, rightward, or diagonally), and each letter can be utilized only once. A single correct solution exists. When a word is correctly identified (for instance, KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI), it will show in blue.
If challenges arise while solving, players can submit any non-theme words (minimum of four letters) for which they’ll receive credit toward a hint. By providing three non-theme words, the “Hint” button becomes clickable, allowing players to reveal letters from one of the theme words. Players will still need to arrange these highlighted letters in the correct sequence to form a theme word. If a hint has already been activated for a word, then submitting another hint will disclose the letter order of that word.
Winning Strands
Unlike other games like Connections and Wordle, Strands doesn’t carry the risk of failure. Upon submitting answers, a player will either correctly identify a word, accumulate credits toward a hint, or the letters will shake, indicating an invalid or too short word. There’s no limit on guesses, nor any time constraints.
The game concludes when all letters on the board have been correctly employed, meaning the spangram and all the theme words have been discovered. Players will then receive a shareable card reflecting their success for the day: blue dots exhibit theme words found, yellow dot
represents when the spangram was located, and a lightbulb
signifies words for which hints were obtained.
