The Strands game can be accessed on the New York Times website and within the NYT Games app.

As you begin, a game board featuring a variety of letters is presented, accompanied by a clue hinting at the overarching theme—generally encapsulated in a phrase like “Better with age.” The goal is to uncover hidden words that correspond to the puzzle’s theme.

A Blend of Crossword and Word Search

The essential term to find is the “spangram,” which directly relates to the puzzle’s theme. For instance, a spangram like FERMENTED aligns with the theme “Better with age,” indicating items that improve over time. It will traverse the game board completely, either horizontally or vertically (hence its name) and will glow yellow when found, making it simpler to decipher the rest of the puzzle.

In Strands, words can be oriented in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonally), and each letter is to be utilized just once. The puzzle is uniquely solvable, with only one correct solution. If a word is correctly identified, it will be highlighted in blue.

For those facing difficulties, submitting non-theme words with four or more letters will earn hints. Submitting three non-theme words makes the “Hint” feature available, which highlights letters from one of the theme words. While it will still require correct sequencing, this can provide critical assistance in completing the puzzle. If an existing hint has been applied, the order of letters for another word will also be revealed if hints are re-applied.
