Strategies for Solving Today’s Strands

To begin, the process of solving can feel somewhat elusive, so a systematic approach is beneficial.

A noteworthy “IZE” appears in the lower left section; this might indicate a word ending.

Spotted in the upper right corner is MESH, which aligns perfectly with our theme. 🔵 Now it seems we’re searching for terms related to unison.

Just beside MESH, AGREE is present. 🔵

On the left-bottom part, CONNECT can be located. 🔵

I recognize I can nearly form HARMONIZE, and to my surprise, I indeed can achieve it. 🔵

Above the spangram, VIBE is located. 🔵

Lastly, RELATE is found. 🔵

Playing Strands

The Strands game can be found on the New York Times website and via the NYT Games app.

Upon starting, a game board filled with letters will appear, along with a clue indicating the board’s theme, typically presented as a phrase such as “Better with age.” The goal is to locate the hidden words that align with the theme.

A Blend of Crossword and Word Search

The paramount word to seek is the “spangram,” which reveals the essence of the puzzle’s theme. For instance, if the theme is “Better with age,” the spangram would be FERMENTED, highlighting items that improve over time. This word will stretch across the board either horizontally or vertically, earning its designation. Finding this spangram generally simplifies solving the remaining puzzle.

In Strands, words can be arranged in any direction (up, down, left, right, and diagonally), and each letter is utilized only once. There exists one correct answer for each puzzle. On successfully identifying a word, like KOMBUCHA or KIMCHI, it will be signified in blue.

If the puzzle proves challenging, players can submit any discovered non-theme words (four letters or longer) to gain a hint. Submitting three such words allows access to the “Hint” button, which will highlight letters from one of the theme words. However, players must still connect these highlighted letters correctly to reveal the theme word. Should there be an existing hint on the board, employing another hint reveals the letter order for that particular word.

Winning at Strands

In contrast to Connections and Wordle, failure is not an option in Strands. Guesses may result in correctly identified answers, credit for hints, or a shaking indication that the submitted word is too brief or invalid. There are no limits on guesses, and no timed constraints.

You achieve victory when all letters on the board are appropriately utilized, meaning that both the spangram and all theme words have been uncovered. Like other NYT games, once the puzzle is solved, a shareable card illustrating daily performance will be displayed: blue dots 🔵 represent theme words found, the yellow dot 🟡 indicates the spangram, and the lightbulb 💡 illustrates words obtained through hints.

Happy puzzling!
