The Strands game can be accessed through the New York Times website or the NYT Games app.
Upon entering the game, you will be presented with a board filled with assorted letters alongside a clue revealing the theme of the board—a phrase such as “Better with age.” Your task is to uncover the hidden words within the board that correspond to the puzzle’s theme.
A Fusion of Crossword and Word Search
The primary word to discover is the “spangram,” which offers a direct expression of the puzzle’s theme. (For instance, in the puzzle themed “Better with age,” the spangram is FERMENTED, as it aptly describes products that indeed improve with age.) The spangram stretches across the entire board, either horizontally or vertically. When you find the spangram, it will be highlighted in yellow, substantially simplifying the task of solving the rest of the puzzle.
In Strands, words can be aligned in any direction (upwards, downwards, side to side, or diagonally), and each letter may only be utilized once. There is only one correct answer for the puzzle. Identifying a word (such as KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI) will highlight it in blue.
If you encounter challenges in deciphering the puzzle, you can input any non-theme words consisting of four or more letters for points towards hints. Upon submitting three non-theme words, the “Hint” button becomes active; clicking it highlights all letters in one of the theme words. However, you must still arrange the highlighted letters correctly to form a legitimate theme word. If there is an already established hint on the board, using another hint will reveal the order of letters for that particular word.
Winning at Strands
Strands offers a unique gameplay experience as there is no possibility of failure. Each time you submit answers, you will either correctly identify a word, earn points towards a hint, or the text will shake to indicate that the provided word is too short or invalid. There are no limits to the number of guesses you can make, nor is there any time pressure imposed.
Victory is achieved when all letters on the board have been correctly used, thus confirming that you’ve located both the spangram and every theme word.
