How to Engage with Strands
The Strands game can be accessed through the New York Times website and the NYT Games app.
Upon starting, players are greeted with a board displaying letters alongside a clue that hints at the underlying theme—typically presented as a phrase, such as “Better with age.” Your objective is to uncover the hidden words within the grid that are connected to the theme.
The Fusion of Crossword and Word Search
The most crucial word to discover is known as the “spangram,” which directly indicates the current theme of the puzzle. For example, in a puzzle titled “Better with age,” the spangram might be FERMENTED, signifying products that improve over time. The spangram spans the entire board either horizontally or vertically, thus its name. Identifying this word usually simplifies the remaining puzzle as well.
In the realm of Strands, words can be arranged in any direction (up, down, left, right, and diagonal), with the stipulation that each letter is utilized once. There exists only a singular solution to each puzzle. When a puzzle word is successfully identified (e.g., KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI), it is marked in blue.
If challenges arise while solving, players may submit any non-theme words with four letters or more to earn progress towards a hint. Three non-theme words will unlock the “Hint” feature, letting you illuminate the letters of one theme word. However, you’ll still need to connect these letters in the correct sequence to identify the theme word. If a hint is already on the board and you utilize another before solving, the order of that word’s letters will be disclosed.
Achieving Success in Strands
Unlike similar games such as Connections and Wordle, Strands allows for endless attempts without penalty. Submitting guesses leads to either the correct identification of a word, credit for hints, or a gentle visual shake indicating that the attempt was either too short or invalid. No guess limits exist, and there’s no pressure of a timer.
Victory is achieved once all board letters have been used, indicating both the spangram and theme words have been correctly identified. Similar to other NYT games, upon successful resolution, players are presented with a shareable card showcasing their performance for the day: blue dots 🔵 represent theme words discovered, the yellow dot 🟡 indicates the spangram, whereas a lightbulb 💡 signifies words for which hints were utilized.
