The Strands game is accessible via the New York Times website and the NYT Games application. 

Upon starting, players will encounter a grid filled with letters alongside a clue hinting at the theme—typically a phrase like “Better with age.” The objective is to discover hidden words within this framework that align with the theme of the puzzle.

A blend of crossword and word search

The key term to identify is the “spangram,” which more directly represents the puzzle’s theme. For instance, the spangram for “Better with age” is FERMENTED, indicating items that improve over time. This spangram will spread across the grid, moving either horizontally or vertically (hence the name). Once located, it will be highlighted in yellow, often simplifying the process of solving the remaining puzzle.

In Strands, words can be arranged in any direction (upward, downward, leftward, rightward, and diagonally), with each letter utilized just once. There is one valid answer per puzzle. Identifying a theme word correctly (for example, KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI) will highlight it in blue. 

If challenges arise, players can submit any non-theme words comprising four letters or more to earn a hint credit. By submitting three non-theme words, the “Hint” button becomes enabled. Clicking it will highlight one of the theme word’s letters, though the letters still must be linked in the correct order to complete the word. If a hint already exists and another is used before solving for that word, the order of the letters will be unveiled.

Winning Strands

Contrary to games like Connections and Wordle, failing Strands is not an option. Each submission yields either a correct answer, hint credits, or a shaking animation indicating the entry is invalid or too short. Players will not run out of attempts, nor will there be a time constraint.

Victory is achieved when all letters on the board are utilized, confirming the identification of both the spangram and all theme words. Similar to other NYT games, solving the puzzle results in a shareable card detailing performance: blue dots 🔵 representing theme words identified, a yellow dot 🟡 indicating the spangram found, and a lightbulb 💡 to denote words receiving hints.
