Unlocking Convenience: The Future of Car Keys with Apple Wallet
Transitioning to using your iPhone as a key for your vehicle might appear futuristic, but it’s already a reality today. Various automotive manufacturers have embraced digital key technology, with many offering this feature in all models produced since 2020. Apple’s Wallet app has facilitated this capability for about five years, enjoying a gradual uptake that is expected to accelerate soon.
Understanding Apple Wallet’s Car Key Functionality
Provided that your vehicle is compatible with Apple Wallet’s digital key, you have three unique methods to operate your car depending on its model. Certain vehicles enable “passive entry,” allowing you to lock and unlock your car as you approach or walk away with your iPhone or Apple Watch. Once inside, starting the engine is just as straightforward, and leaving the vehicle will automatically relock it as you depart.
Some models, however, rely on a “proximity” feature, wherein you need to present your device to a door sensor to gain access, followed by using it at a key reader to start the vehicle.
Additionally, a remote locking and starting option is available via the Wallet app itself, giving control from a distance.
