Threads Unveils Basic Direct Messaging Functionality
Though it may seem a bit delayed, Threads has introduced a new direct messaging feature that stands apart from Instagram. Unfortunately, it’s quite rudimentary at this stage.
At present, users can only send messages to those they follow who also reciprocate. Additionally, mutual followers on Instagram are included, even if there’s no direct follow on Threads—highlighting that Threads remains closely tied to its parent platform, Instagram.
How to Initiate a DM on Threads
To begin using this capability, ensure the app is updated on your iOS or Android device (or access it via the web). A new Messages icon will appear at the bottom toolbar adjacent to the Home button. Upon entering the Messages screen, you can tap the “new message” button located in the upper right corner to initiate a conversation. You may either search for a user or select from the suggested contacts to commence chatting.
Currently, this Messages tab is the sole means to initiate new discussions. Direct messaging from another user’s profile isn’t possible, even if you both follow each other. However, sharing a Threads post with followers can now be done directly via DM, appearing in the Threads messaging interface rather than through Instagram.

After sending a message, users can long-press it to revoke it if needed. Furthermore, messages can be reacted to, replied to in-line, or copied, but there is a lack of additional functionalities. The platform does not support media sharing, voice messages, chat customization, or other typical features found in modern messaging applications.
Enhancements Anticipated for Threads DM
Currently, the direct messaging capabilities on Threads have significant limitations. However, several enhancements are on the horizon:
- Message Controls: Future updates will allow users to determine who can contact them, opting to restrict messages solely to Threads or Instagram followers.
- Message Requests Folder: A separate folder for incoming message requests will be introduced to prevent unsolicited messages from cluttering your inbox.
- Group Messaging: Upcoming updates will facilitate group conversations.
- Filters: Enhanced filtering options will help users locate and manage their messages more conveniently.
