Enhancing Accessibility Through Innovative Features
Integrating accessibility functionalities within technology is crucial for creating more user-friendly devices and applications. Recently, Apple unveiled an array of new and improved accessibility features—including the Accessibility Reader and enhanced Braille support—set to be introduced across its devices soon. Additionally, TikTok is launching several new features aimed at broadening access to its platform and content for all users. Here’s what to expect.
AI-enhanced Alternative Text
TikTok is already equipped with an alternative text function that enables content creators to insert descriptions accessible via screen readers. This can be done when uploading photos or after the content goes live (located under More options > Add alternative text). The platform is currently testing an AI-driven feature that will verbally describe content if creators forget to include alternative text, significantly aiding those with visual impairments.
Enhanced Color Contrast
Users of TikTok can now activate a high-contrast feature, which boosts the visibility of text, icons, and other elements within the app. This improved color contrast enhances the clarity between text and objects against the background, thus facilitating better readability. This new ability joins the existing function that allows users to modify text size specifically within the TikTok app, independently from device settings. Both can be adjusted under Accessibility > Appearance.
Support for Bold Text
TikTok will now align with the bold text settings established at the device level. This means that if the bold text feature is activated, all text within the app will display in bold. Users can enable or disable bold text through Settings > Display & Brightness on iOS or Settings > Accessibility > Display size and text > Bold text on Android devices.
