How to Switch Back to Classic Search in Google Photos
Google Photos has recently integrated Gemini AI for photo searches through a feature known as “Ask Photos,” introduced late last year. While this innovative tool offers a novel way to sift through your image collections, users may find that its speed does not measure up to the classic search function. As a result, it may not be the best choice for broader searches. For those who prefer the quicker, traditional method on Android devices, there is a simple shortcut to restore the older search functionality.
As highlighted by 9to5Google, users can easily revert to the classic, non-AI search by long-pressing the search icon—located in the bottom-right corner and labeled “Ask.” Alternatively, a quick double-tap on this button will achieve the same result. Importantly, this method still accommodates natural language queries, allowing users to request images such as “photos of forests from 2023” with similarly reliable results.
Until improvements are made to enhance the efficiency and precision of AI-driven searches, many users may find the traditional search functionality more effective. Additionally, there are concerns regarding the substantial energy consumption of AI applications, particularly for straightforward tasks. Google is currently testing new interface designs for Ask Photos, as some users have noticed modifications that shrink the layout’s focus on AI searches. However, the predominant user experience in the U.S. still features a full-screen AI search interface, with a minor button available to switch back to the classic method—the existence of this shortcut can be particularly beneficial.
Nonetheless, there are occasions when Ask Photos can prove beneficial, particularly when searching for specific memories, such as locating a Halloween image featuring someone in a Fall Guys costume. Thankfully, users can select their preferred tool depending on the need. A single tap activates the AI search, while a long press or double tap will redirect to the faster, classic search. Currently, this feature applies exclusively to the Android version of Google Photos.
