Enhancing Your TikTok Security with the New Security Checkup
While many social media platforms often lack robust privacy and security measures, TikTok is taking a step forward by introducing a built-in feature aimed at helping users safeguard their accounts. The new Security Checkup dashboard provides insights into potential security vulnerabilities and offers a clear pathway to fortify account safety by guiding users through necessary adjustments.
Navigating TikTok’s Security Checkup
To access your TikTok security dashboard, navigate to your profile and select Settings and privacy > Security and permissions. The Security Checkup feature will indicate which settings are complete and which ones require your attention, along with step-by-step instructions for making enhancements:
-
Inputting an email address and/or phone number for account recovery.
-
Activating two-step verification for added protection.
-
Establishing a passkey using device-based authentication methods such as Face ID or Touch Unlock.
-
Reviewing devices currently logged into your account, including the option to sign out of any unauthorized or inactive devices.
Additionally, TikTok will highlight any “unusual account behavior” in your Security Checkup log, allowing for prompt oversight of potential security threats.
This trend in security features isn’t exclusive to TikTok. For instance, Meta provides a Security Checkup for Instagram, which assists users in strengthening their passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and incorporating recovery information. To access this feature, visit your profile settings (by tapping the three vertical lines), then go to Accounts Center > Password and Security > Security Checkup to choose the account you wish to assess.
Similarly, Google offers a security dashboard that details where you’re signed into your Google account, integrated applications and services, recent security occurrences, as well as sign-in and recovery settings, with personalized suggestions for enhancing your account’s protection.
